In the Frame
“There are no rosy days left,” Katherine said. She gazed at the green square perfectly carved into the garden floor, rotten brown foam still smoking in the first light.
“Not so Kate.” Jon set down the last basket and closed the door.
“The child was telling the truth.”
“We are safe; they won’t believe it’s happened here, not yet.”
Katherine let the drape fall and together they packed the stones in the frame.
***********
Jenny knocked three times on the heavy door and returned to the steps.
“The child is here,” Jon said. “I will go.”
“No, they’re mine. I’ll do it.” Katherine kicked the last chunk of earth aside and stepped away from the garden.
“There is time Kate. I will go.” Jon reached the old-fashioned auto before the pinch in his temple flattened him.
“Katherine, Jon?” No answer persuaded Jenny to press her face against the vast pane. She sensed the house was empty.
******************
The door opened and the child crossed the threshold keeping her hand on the knob, blue eyes wide.
“Hello?”
Small white shoes skipped across the wood boards scattering dust and innocence.
“They want more.” Jenny said aloud. She reached into the last basket and selected an ugly black stone.
“Put it back, select another,” Katherine said. She entered the kitchen trailing wet earth, regret gripping the bands upon her womb.
“I won’t!” Jenny shoved the container and a thousand brilliant stones scattered.
***************************
“Jon, it’s time,” Katherine said. She patted a thick round tummy and smiled.
The shovel smacked the hard cold earth where Katherine buried the black stone. Unpolluted sprouts soon poked their heads out of the muck and Jon christened the exchange a jenny rose.

Thanks Karen, I figured that would be the case. I must say I really enjoyed doing this challenge. It was a new path for me and I think I will try it again.
Oh, and Timothy, I use Microsoft Word. When I need some inspiration I go to Tools on the menu bar and select Research. A window will open on the right side of the Word Document where you can input a word. This is a handy little tool for looking up a word (dictionary) or finding a synonym, etc. It keeps me moving sometimes when I am sitting there staring at the blank page wondering what's supposed to come next...

Hi Heidi
Sorry, but at over two hundred words more than the maximum word count, this story isn't eleigible for the competition.
But I'm really glad that the titles triggered a story for you, and I'll come back and read it when I have more time.
Cheers

Thanks, this was my first attempt at something like this. I found it very hard to keep it short. I cut wherever I could but left the pieces that I felt were important, even if it left a haphazard picture.
I have to tell you I was watching something about evil people on the History Channel before I started the challenge. A very uncomfortable piece of the documentary was about women with Munchausen syndrome. I guess it had an impact on my piece.
I did a word/tool/research on 'frame' for inspiration and came up with the word body. I decided that packing stones in the frame had to be something spiritual having to do with putting pieces of the body together (as opposed to taking one a part). Sorry, ew that is gross. I was thinking about sacrifice and all sorts of things and this just tumbled out. I know it is wacky. I will post the rest of it in a few minutes. I think there are 3 more mini chapters bringing it to around 200 or so words total.
T, sorry I am ignorant! I had a hard time maneuvering Editred last night. Didn't know you sent me that email. I am going to read your 'Games' piece before I hit the hay. I will comment as soon as I can. Thanks to Cherley and Lanclass as well. I'll be over to return the reading favor.
