Story Challenge #28 - English Literature

Danny stared at the clock in disbelief. He looked down at his exam paper, disappointment gripping him. His spidery scrawl spelled out his first chosen question on an otherwise blank page, yet an hour had already gone by.

He picked up the sheet of questions again, fighting to make sense of them. They could have been in Hebrew for all he cared. He knew nothing about the theme of mortality in the poetry of Keats, and even less about the use of personal epiphany in Dubliners.

He idly flicked through his copies of the exam texts but they yielded no new wisdom. Trying to fight the rising tide of panic, he gazed around the room. He blanched; his fellow students were all bent over their desks, scribbling furiously as they only paused to check a quote.

Sighing deeply, Danny picked up his pen. He scrawled a number beneath the question, the only thing he could remember from a book. As he stood up to leave the exam, he paused to read his single answer.

42.

I have this nightmare most nights - and school is only a distant memory for me.

Love the ending - he has to get points for giving the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.

Thanks for the read and the smiles.

Cheers

Karen

Brilliant! The answer to all things. Clever, Icy.
'fighting to make sense of them. They could have been in Hebrew for all he cared.' Don't these two ideas contadict each other? ...for all he knew, perhaps. Only a nit pick.
The ending is so good and unexpected. I hated exams and could relate.
Good read.

I took Eng. Lit. from a teacher who published a critique on Keats. It was very intimidating. I was an under-grad; the rest of the class were grad-students. Ouch. I passed out of the kindness of the teacher. I worked hard, but I can sure relate to this story. Great read. J

I was sweating with Danny all the way to 42, then I burst out laughing. Excellent! Thank you.

The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

I think that I've been in this situation. Exams - aaaargh!!!

I think you caught the tension and the desperation well here, Icy. The details were apt and helped to get the realism spot on.

I don't think Danny's going to pass this one.

Thanks for the read - Grae:)
