Closed Eyes - From Band Nerds: Poetry From The 13th Chair Trombone Player

I’d like to tell you about a friend
I met last year this time.
He was a pretty special kid
You see my friend is blind.

That didn’t stop him from playing his horn
He just listened once and knew it.
He’d close his eyes and finger along
I’m not sure how he’d do it.

I asked him why he closed his eyes
His answer quite profound.
He said, “People tend to stare at them,
Not focus on my sound.”

I thought, how true the world we have
We look before we listen.
Maybe if we closed our eyes
The world would pay attention.
