Do you still remember a movie titled “Pursuit of Happiness”? I guess you do. This movie starred by Will Smith is so genuine, simple, and meaningful. Actually, the story is about a hardworking man who left by his wife because of financial problem. He became a single father and raised his child by himself. They through some hard moment, full of struggle, but they never ever gave up. Every cloud has a silver lining, eventually they made it and got a happy life. Well, you’d better watch this movie to know their whole amazing story (by buying the DVD or VCD).
Anyway, have you ever heard or seen any local movie that has a good content like that? Actually, we can barely find an educated and meaningful movie in our beloved country, Indonesia. I think we got a lack of kids and teenagers movie. I can say that we can’t even find it here. Compared to Hollywood or Bollywood movie, Indonesian’s movie is jaded and monotonous (I beg your pardon). It’s not because of the sound effect, actors, directors or anything else it’s just about the plot of the story. Why? It’s simple. Just take a look at TV screen, wait till a commercial break...there’ll be trailer of some movies. Then you will know what’s all about. I was once watching TV and kept changing a channel, you know what? I was stunned cause there was one of “Local Ghost” appeared on the screen. I was just stunned and wanted to laugh at once. Cause it was scary and ridiculous indeed.
Ghost, ghost and more ghosts...are that what we can consume all the time we want to watch local movie? Ghosts, they are all become a star and get famous. Pocong, Kuntilanak, Genderuwo, Sundel Bolong, Tuyul maybe and etc, they keep coming out gradually. It seems like ghost stuffs dominate local movie industry. I don’t know why but I think people never get bored to watch same old ghost movies. No matter what the title or what is it about, as long as it’s a new movie and only at theatre, they’ll immediately watch the movie. My friends, for instance, they like watching ghost movie, though it looks same and boring, no matter what it is they’ll go to cinema and queue for the tickets. No wonder why so many people here often hallucinate and later they’ll get possessed. Indeed, those weird ghost movies do not educate youth and everyone who watches. Otherwise, it will cause a psychological effect, just like what I mentioned before, they’ll hallucinate and become a coward. Can you imagine what’s gonna happen if kids watch it? They’ll never be an independent person.
Beside ghost movie, romance or comedy romance both of dominate our local movie industry as well. Actually it’s good to show some love to somebody, boyfriend maybe or anyone else. But, what we’ve got in our local movie is different. Some of it full of intimate scene, just like kissing or even there’s a sex scene. We’re living in Indonesia, not in America or Europe, which has western culture. In this case, we need some more censors. Cause there’s always a part of the movie that can’t be watched by teenagers or kids. Do you still remember of smack down tragedy? I called it smack down tragedy cause there were some victims of this TV show. Those victims are kids and some of them died due to imitate the scene of smack down. It’s clear that some Indonesian people can’t distinguish the bad or good effect of TV show or Movie etc. Those romance movies scene, are already copied by teenagers. In fact, there are hundreds of teenagers kissing at a public place, hugging, and many of them get pregnant. And you know what? Actually you can watch adult movie at cinema if you get a big and tall body, so there’s no difference whether you are 13 or 17 cause they don’t check your identity card, right?
Well, I think it’d be better to make a documentary movie about the reality of Indonesia. About how many people get starving, how many kids are dropped out from school, how many people got nowhere to live, and many others educated movie that can be watched by all ages. And you’d better donate your money to those unfortunate than to watch some uneducated movie.
