still waters wee story 31

Sunshine glistens off still waters reflecting gnarly trees that line the riverbank. A slight breeze rustles the brittle foliage. Cicadas shrill.

The drought is in its tenth week. Reservoirs are dangerously low. A total fire ban has been imposed and sprinkler systems are forbidden.

Farmers despair. Sunscreen merchants rejoice. Insipid livestock graze arid pastures. Horses drink sparingly from shallow troughs. Dust settles everywhere.

Faulty air conditioners motivate road rage. Passengers swelter. Panel beaters profit from inattention.

Bumblebees swarm the rhododendrons as Pedro paces towards his shed. Daisies and dandelions dot his lush front lawn.

Well-secluded, Trudy documents her neighbour’s apathy with a digital camera. Intermittent clicks capture the unraveling, connection and unlawful hosing.

Water vaguely traverses the cobblestone pathway and spills into a garden where it energizes the sprouting weeds.

I thought I'd read some of your work and started here - I don't think it can get much better!! What's interesting is that, where I live, we have had less than 4 inches of rain this entire year, so I know exactly what you are describing. Great work. Did it win?

good story i would like to know what was the inspiration behind the story and how you manage to knit simple words together to become an extra ordinary writing

A nice descriptove piece, Les - yep, the neighbour's an idiot, eh? It was, as has been said, a nice contrast to see his uncaring attitude against the terrible effects of drought though the rest of the land.

Thanks for the read.

Cheers

Karen

Good writing, Leslie. I expected the cops to show up any minute to throw that idiot into the slammer. Seems like there's always someone who ignores the needs of others. Well done. Janet
