My Life's Experience

Scene I
( a mall food court)

J: Hello my name is jack swendler, I am employed by a tech company and travel from town to town, to hospitals and large companies marketing our latest products. As a result I am fairly alone and thus live a unique life. This month I hang my hat in Columbus, where I know a couple old friends of mine. The setting begins in a mall, I sit and watch as young children admire the Kugle Fountain. They are entranced in a state of pure amazement. As the coin hits the water the water ripples and the movement reverberates in the child’s mind. I wish I could look upon the world with the wonder of a child, that each experience was a new one, an amazing one. Here we lay our scene.

J: As I was watching a man fly a kite the other day I was amazed. The way it flipped and twirled, flirting with the air.

R: I tend to see it differently I saw the kite as a certain slave, subject to the every whim of his masters command.

J: As you are a slave and I am completely free, you may see it this way, and I in mine own view. Think about how many people we allow to walk through our lives, each one has their own story, yet so many walk by unnoticed unheard.

R: Well practice what you preach, on her.

J: Not only will I talk to her, I shall hold her hand. But it would be no fun unless money was involved.

R: Ok then, 1 dollar.

J: Ha, you are a stingy one, but you are on, hold I need some inspiration, and so I strut.

Hello, my name is jack, im sorry for bothering you, but in truth I could not let you silently walk through my life, I would like to hear your story, but first could I interest you in a magic trick.

C: sure

J:can I see your hand? (jack grabs her hand and holds it)

C: im sorry I have a boyfriend.

J: ahhhh im sorry for that fact also.
What do you do around here, I would hate to be alone on a Friday night.

C: mostly dancing, theres a club on high street.

J: can I count on seeing you there?

C: most likely

J: She has informed me she has a boyfriend, but there is hope, for she is sorry. But time to pay up, I have completed the task. And I intend on seeing her Friday.

R: Did she not say she had a boyfriend?

J: Yes, but if I can dance with her perhaps I can change that.

R: How so?

J: Well you see dancing is all very sexual, the slow buildup the gyration of the hips, the hastening of the beat as sweat begins to roll down the body, all ending with a final, sudden beat of percussion, and of course followed by a slow song, a chance to hold your partner close and express your love.

R: This life you lead could use some mending.

J: Perhaps it is your own that needs a change.

SCENE II
(a club)

J: It is Friday night, a beautiful night, the stars would appear to be in my favor. I try on several outfits before deciding on this, the perfect outfit for me. Not only do I look stunning, but it proves to be a great representation of myself. ( wearing a half white, half black suit)

I was wondering if I could have one dance, that’s all I would ask of you

DANCE

C: You are a wonderful dancer

J: You have any plans for the remainder of the night?

C: None that can not be changed.

Scene III
( the woods, it is evening)

J: As the month drew to a close we became very close, I instilled my view of life on her, and she instilled pure qualities within me. I wanted one special night with her before I had to leave the city, though we intended on remaining very close.

C: The stars seem to be brighter than ever today.

J: They are indeed wonderful, the way the light up the sky, that everyone may look on them, it is one of the few things one can enjoy, despite religion, money, or society. Everyone can still feel a connection from these constellations.

C: I have always felt the same way, please stay, im sorry, no, I know you will return, I just need to be practical.

J: I will, but This is the only moment we can count on. Sometimes there are things in life we can not be sure of, and we must take a jump and go for it. One of the greatest feelings is falling. You have no idea where you will end up, and as you fall you are forced to live in that singular moment. No matter how many times one has fallen the feeling is new every time. Why am I telling you this? This goes against everything I ever believed, come, live, experience, all in the moment, all anew. ( jump off stage, while in midair lights go off)

SCENE IV
( a street, cathryn’s bedroom is visible in a smaller area of the stage, she lies asleep)

J: Hello my name is Jaaarome, I cant think of a very good last name, however, I do not believe anyone will care to know. I have always wondered what being homeless is like and so here I am. People may frown upon this experiment I call life, but I need to experience everything, if only for a short period of time. Perhaps I experienced true love, but how could I possibly know if I had never felt it before? I am a true believer in Thoreau’s message, and ( Cathryn awakes chiming in, reading a letter at her bedside) I left the woods for the same reason I entered because I felt I had many more lives to live, I believe I may have felt true love, and I did enjoy the feeling but I must continue to live and to learn.(only jack, as cathryn appears to be heartbroken) You may look at me as a monster, and perhaps you should, but how many people wish they had more than one life and I do, and now I leave you, to live, to love and to experience.
