The Desert of Fears and the Meaning of Life

The twisted underpinnings of a fractured mind
stare out of half-blank eyes as parched lips tremble.
The desert stretches out interminably behind,
while the bustling world extends before.
Sun-charred skin envelops aching muscles;
the cold wind burns sand-scarred eyelids.
Tear ducts dried by the sun’s harsh rays
ache to burst their drought-dammed riverbeds.
Ineffable dreams shattered by a pitiless world.
That first step is hard, harder than ten thousand
expended crossing the desert of fears, but the
tears come, banishing trepidations.
A blistered foot reaches forward to the future.
