The moon smiles tonight
A perfect Cheshire grin
Sparking fairy dusted light
Upon the river's skin

An easy stroll with an easy smile
At life bursting in the very air
While shadowed thoughts
Follow close
Recall

One
Who is not here

The moon it was new
On my birthday last
Veiled shyly she
Let the stars shine bright
Reflecting a billion teardrops
In chilled velvet
Recalled

One
Who was not there

Just a score of nights before
Luna's mouth down-turned
Fanged
Faces circle in soulless splendor
In black and red and porcelain white
A near forgotten friend
Touches my elbow
Light
Fingers flitting like butterfly wings
With timid care and wordless stare
As if I were fragile
Glass

True
But broken already
Three moons gone
Its face full and bursting
Into a thousand jagged shards
Splinters and dust and toothy chunks
Pieced together by time
And resolution
In clotted glue and blood
Congealed
Sharper and stronger
This estranged form
Renewed

We smile
We nod
Knowing all is forgiven
Though forgotten not

Still
What words could begin our converse
(That would not just make matters worse)
So perhaps instead
For a phase or two
Share silent shadowed discourse
In the moon's reflective light
