Ode to My Favorite Food
What can be said about those long rods of joy
also known as carrots?
First of all, they're famous
eaten by all the big celebs
I mean, I don't mean to name drop but...
Peter Cottontail and the Velveteen Rabbit swear by them
And I heard.....that bugs bunny gets them shipped
all the way from Al-bur-quer-que because he said
they grow best there.
And Forrest Gump loves them with peas
Just as much as he loves Jenny.
As for me, I eat 'em because they taste good
High and fiber, low in fat
just like beans
but without the flatulence
They are good for your eyes too
I mean, if Bugs hasn't needed glasses in all these years
They have to be
Because that fool is old.
Their versatility is unmatched
you can put em in practically every one
of the four major dietary necessities
You can have carrot cake, carrot muffins,
you can steam em, boil em, broil em.
You can make carrot stew, carrot bread, carrot soup.
I could go on,
but I'm not trying to sound like Bubba Gump in this piece.
I think my love for carrots is genetic.
Passed down like third grade papers
boy girl boy girl boy girl
My uncle loves them, I love them
and now my nephew loves them too.
The mini carrots are like lays brand potato chips to me
I cannot eat just one
When I see them in their little plastic bag
marked with the "O" to show
they've been grown in organic soil
I feel like "Pookie" from "New Jack City"
"...they keep callin' me and callin' me"
(but I don't go through any withdrawals that I know of
if I don't have any)
I have to say though
I feel like a crack-head when I see them
I get my stash
find a nice quiet place where I can be alone
to envelop my system with their sweet crunchy goodness
and then I'm like
aaahhh...I got my carrot fix

| Hee hee! I like raw carrots exclusively. And I eat them regularly, but not enough to turn orange from too much beta carotene. ;) I think this is a cool piece or writing. |

Roast beef and carrots, Chicken stew with carrots, carrots dipped in peanut butter is great or any dip. I like them in spinach dip.
Vitamin A is good for skin, eyes, gums and has antioxidents. They take a long time to grow in my yard though. They need plenty of sand.
I loved this little ditty you wrote. Saving it. |

| thanks for a really fun read. i just planted two different tpyes of carrots: a yellow variety and a purple one. they both have the same wonderful carrot taste. my son was astounded when he had his first purple carrot. he even took some to school. the comment about eyesight is interesting. this "old wive's tale" ( there's no clinical evidence ) resulted from a British intelligence cover-up of the early use of radar. in order to explain the success of their pilots in shooting down enemy aircraft (due to early radar)they disseminated the story that their pilots were eating lots of carrots which improved their vision. |

| MMm youve almost convinced me LOL. My mother hated them so she being a culinary fascist I never had my full childhood quota at home, only through school meals. I did really get into raw carrots a while back when I wanted to lose some weight and after awhile I got used to, and much healthier than a snickers bar. Raw they also have an interesting peppery aftertaste. My nemisis came when I had my appendix removed three years ago and the first food I had post-op was carrot and coriander soup, which I instantly hurled back up again. Even now I break out into a sweat if I get a whiff of it. But you have provided food for thought (doh!). Time to re-evaluate the critters LOL. Thanks, a very thought provoking read. |
