gone

As I fill in within the thin edges
there's a huge space
one I am not sure will be filled
even given the will
there was then
and then there is now
and a journey between
each breath another step
one thing that reaches me
swathed in private mystery
is the shock
of my dear friends'
sudden loss.

One day she expected him
I guess, for in truth I do not know
he did not return
there was a space
in her life
where he should show
just gone
nothing to see
no words
no last hand holding moment
no right of passage
just gone

How has she coped with that
how many nights
how many days
how many birthdays
how many moments when
support was needed?
How may one
live in the surety of consciousness
when life is so
easily gone?

SIGH, This really touched me. I never really feel pain when someone goes because I always think that it's for the best but this really had me thinking twice. Thanks for the read, it left me a little emotional but I am grateful nonetheless.

Very moving. One of life's universal experiences so difficult to describe it's so all encompassing. This poem does it well. One small point: on first reading I read "her sudden loss" as being her death. Of course doesn't. There's so much in the simple truth of the word "gone". I'm sure many readers will empthise with this poem. Thank you.
