Translation
Understanding (Verständnis)
I am talking to you
You are talking to me
But that is not communication with each other
Our mutual understanding is not in sight!
Different goals, different needs, different expectations
What we believe to belong now has faded away
Giving up and ending a relationship after so many years is hard
But our last good conversation seems long ago
I long for peace and harmony,
Telling you about my dreams
You need the spontaneous, the unexpected
Never wanting to miss an adventure
Still I keep holding on to us
Hoping that you will allow
Understanding for each other, conversations deep into the night
That’s what good relationships are made of.

| Good point. I do know I was a teenager when I wrote it but I can't really recall what gave me the idea for it so, yes, from my perspective on it now, I would also say relationship is the better word. I will change it. Didn't think about it much when I translated it (and as you say it is the literal translation there). Good point! Thanks! |

Lovely that you've included a translation into English so that non-German speakers can read and appreciate. Of course, as with most translations, it seems more powerful and heartfelt in German.
One question, however. Did you really mean "friendship" or "relationship?" I had the impression that this was a male/female relationship, but I could be wrong. I had the feeling that this was more than a platonic friendship and more of an intimate friendship or relationship with a lover or boyfriend. It might make the poem clearer if you clarified that point. Friendship might be the literal translation, but you may really mean "relationship." I could be mistaken, however. Please feel free to ignore my comment if I'm wrong. I'm glad you didn't feel compelled to make the English translation rhyme as it would have been a completely different poem if you had. |

| I wish I could read this, but I'm definitely not skilled in German enough at all! Haha. I'll make it a goal to learn more so maybe someday... |

Thanks! I appreciate your comment.
Don't we all have relationships that go astray cuz we lack communication at a certain time or simply don't make the effort to set something right when we see things start to go wrong? |
