The Frustration of Maps

Prussian blue water stares
placidly, almost antagonizingly
at me
from my lap at the side of the highway
The Moon
tries tapping my
shoulder and whispering in my ear—trying
to tell me: “Keep going. You’re
close.”

But my focus
is on the inch to mile ratio,
the name of a town where
in 1881 a infamous gun battle took place
and the smoke is still dissipating,
the tiny roads that look like veins
on a woman that has been standing her
entire
life.

The light
in my car flickers.
I lose
my place.

This poem hits a nerve with me, the call of the open road, a plan of action, and - it seems - the inevitability of distraction (the beautiful waters, the moon, the light flickering - perhaps acting as fate in this case) when faced with a world of infinite possibilities. That's what I got out of this piece, at least.

Either way it's a wonderful description of a scene and has a surreal feel to it, mostly with the whispering moon, I think - that's a great image. Well done.

happy writings.

This is incredible.

“Keep going. You’re
close.”

But my focus
is on the inch to mile ratio"

We're always focused on everything that doesn't matter.
