Translation of Mondnacht by Joseph von Eichendorff

Moonlit Night

It was as if heaven had quietly kissed the earth,
So that she dreamt of him
In the shimmer of blossoms.

The breeze blew through the fields,
the ears of grain waved gently,
the woods whispered softly,
so starry-clear was the night.

And my soul
stretched its wings out wide,
and flew over the silent countryside
as if it were flying home.

-Joseph von Eichendorff

Mondnacht

Es war, als hätt` der Himmel
die Erde still geküßt,
daß sie im Blütenschimmer
von ihm nun träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
die Ähren wogten sacht,
es rauschten leis die Wälder,
so sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
weit ihre Flügel aus,
flog durch die stillen Lande,
als flöge sie nach Haus.

Joseph von Eichendorff

The woods whispered so softly. And flew over the silent countryside.Solitude and love brought to life it kind of like takes you to a place which is quiet were you can bask on true love, beautiful piece.

It must be very challenging to mantain the essence of the original language i believe its much more powerful in German i wish i could read German

I was hearing Robert Schumann while reading this. Beautiful job, Elena!
Brava! You should translate Feldeinsamkeit by Allmers, too.

This is my favorite German poem and indeed my favorite poem of all time. Over the years I've seen several translations, but none did the original German justice, in my opinion; and the rhyming translation I saw was truly ghastly.

I wanted to share my own translation; I've tried to preserve some of the beauty of the original German language. I've also posted the German for comparison purposes. Enjoy. I just love this; it has such a serene, peaceful feeling to it. One of the best examples of poems from the German Romantic period, in my opinion.
