Unable to Let Go

The woods were quiet. The sky was clear. She walked gracefully through the maze of stones. The moonlight lit up her porcelain skin. Her long, dark hair cascaded down her back, gently moving in the slight breeze. Even as she walked, she could feel it. That uneasy nagging at the back of her mind.

The nagging was her past, which she was unable to let go of. As she reached her destination, Aralynne Smith knew she had made a mistake. She gave up everything for him, and he left her for someone else. It had been many years, but she couldn't forget. She was unable to let go of those memories: the night she gave everything up...and the night he left.

Moonlight lit the words on the stone before her. A single tear slipped down her face as she read it.

"Aralynne J. Smith

August 12, 1801 - August 6, 1819"

I love pieces that show you new things the second time you read them, and this piece does that well. The language is very soft and quiet, it sets the scene wonderfully.

Rather haunting and sad; a ghost wandering through the graveyard, seeing her own headstone? Very effectively creates and eerie mood. I like the misdirection and the unexpected ending/revelation at the end. We get the impression that Aralynne killed herself at the tender age of 18 because of the jerk she gave up everything for who left her.
