Destiny Revealed

Far away, in a strange and magical land, an ancient wizard king lay dying. His snowy gray beard showed of old age and great wisdom. People who knew him well kneeled beside his body, sobbing as the night grew darker and colder. Suddenly he spoke; his voice is no more than a whisper. The people listened eagerly. His voice, though so quiet and raspy, echoed out for what seemed like miles:

“To save the kingdom from true despair,
find a maiden true and fair.
Her birthplace is far and seems unknown,
but she is the true heir to the throne.
You must fetch her, swift and quick,
Or else the kingdom itself will fall sick.”

Having finished reciting the prophecy, the old king closed his eyes and opened them no more. The lamentations of the people around him reverberated into the night air, as a pair of cold, bottomless eyes watched from afar, narrowing in distaste.

Discovery

The autumn sun shone through the small holes of the trees and the air smelled of freshly crushed pine cones. A girl darted through the trees, with the agility, speed, and quickness of a wolf. The morning sunlight shone on her sapphire eyes. Her slightly curled hair flew behind her in shiny brown clouds. The girl laughed out loud, her melodic voice echoing through the trees.
Leaves flew as the girl ran past. Her beauty made the forest look dark and dull in comparison. Evelyn sighed. She stopped slightly and halted altogether. Evelyn ran her hand through her soft, glossy hair and sighed. Soon, it would be her birthday, and everyone would get her gift cards to Hollister, Pac Sun, American Eagle, or Abercrombie. Then the makeup cases would come piling up, and she would give all those to Bella. What would she need them for anyway? Everyone else thought Evelyn was beautiful and gorgeous. So many guys have asked her out but she had all said no. Evelyn was never interested.
While she rested, she heard a voice echo from behind her. ” Evelyn, are you there? Don’t leave me here alone!” Evelyn heard worry in her sister’s voice.” Don’t worry Bella, I’ll stay right here for you to catch up. Evelyn sat down, leaning against a tree trunk and waited. Then, after a while, she was sure she heard footsteps nearby. Suddenly, Evelyn had a strong desire to scare Bella. So she hid herself behind a thick pine tree and waited. Bella soon caught up, her golden curls bouncing on her shoulder. She gasped for breath, and looked around frantically. “Eve, where are you? You said you would wait for me! Evelyn!” Her voice had become panicky, and Evelyn sighed and stepped out of from behind the pine tree. She groaned. “You ruin all the fun. I am never going to bring you here to the forest again.” Bella glared at her. “It’s not my fault I don’t know these woods as well as you do! You spend almost all of your free time here! Well, forget it! I don’t even want to come back here anyways! The twigs and dirt are ruining my makeup.” She took out her personal pink mirror and checked to see of her makeup was still in place. Evelyn laughed.
“Bella, no boy is going to be here, so stop fussing with your makeup. You look fine.” She heard a rustling behind her, and whipped around. Two figures emerged. She recognized them as Andrew and Daniel, two boys that were in her classes. Like almost every other guy in school, they had asked her out too. They grinned when they saw Evelyn. She narrowed her eyes good-naturally. “I have told you two a million times, I am not interested, so just keep the comment to yourself.” She heard Bella fussing with her makeup again, and sighed. Bella had a huge crush on Daniel ever since he had helped her pick up her books in the hallway. Bella had said to her a million time too many that she was so lucky to have a guy like Daniel talk to her. Bella wasn’t the most bravest or outgoing person in the world. Daniel laughed loudly. “No, I’m not here to chase after you. Andrew is.” Andrew suddenly turned red, and Evelyn felt sorry for him. It must be hard for him, I guess, she thought. Maybe I should make the first move. She smiled and walked to Andrew. He started to sweat and his face was really red. She took his hand and asked, “What did you want to ask me?” She used her most flirty, sweet, and girlish voice. Andrew stuttered,” Well…I was wondering if you…if you wanted to go to the dance with me. You know, the fall dance?”
Of course she knew. Her friends had pestered her about who she was going with. Evelyn had to ward off desperate guys, ignore the nasty rumors, and stop shopping trips for outfits. She never knew why people made such a big fuss over these things. They weren’t even important. She looked at Andrew again. He seemed to be hopeful, and she wondered if Daniel had told him that she rejected all offers. Still, he was a nice person, so she might actually consider him. Evelyn smiled kindly, and said,” I’ll think about, ok? I’m just not sure. I’ll let you know when I have my answer.” Andrew nodded, and he seemed to take that as a no. She turned to Bella. “Come on. We have to go home now. Mom will be worried again.” Bella was reluctant to leave, maybe because of Daniel, but Evelyn gave Bella her best I’m-going-to-kill-you-if-you-don’t-listen-to-me look, and Bella followed after saying goodbye.
Bella chattered on and on about Daniel. “Did you see his eyes? They’re beautiful! And his smile! He just makes me want to fall over. His lips are so soft, and his skin is so smooth! And plus, he’s kind too. Oh my goodness, he is so amazing!” This continued on for quite awhile until they reached the mansion.
The large white-painted oak doors were just as shiny as ever, with great care and treatment. A golden door handle was nailed onto the door, and crystal windows peeped out of the white door. Companion windows were made out of crystal too, and the frame was painted gold. Evelyn looked up and saw her room, her favorite place in the house. It had a large open balcony where she could sit outside and read on sunny days. She rang the doorbell, and she heard the butler, Carlos, mumble, “Yes?” Evelyn laughed. “You know it’s me, Carlos.” The door swung open to reveal a tall man with a tuxedo suit. Carlos had a happy smile, and he always had a special treat from the cook for her. Bella, on the other hand, preferred Jake, the newest servant at the mansion. He was young and handsome and had blonde hair, but Evelyn thought that his voice sounded as squeaky as a mouse.
She climbed up the winding marble stairs, and made her way into her room. It was a huge bedroom, with everything she could ever want or need. There was the bathroom, made with crystal and diamond, the edges painted a shimmering silver. Her bed was better. It was beautiful bedchamber, with rosy pink walls and there was always a sweet smelling aroma of flowers that filled the air. It was a great, comfortable bed. The sheets were lavender, and the pillows were a creamy white. Evelyn sighed and plopped down on the bed. She felt two warm tongues, licking her hand that hung from the side of her bed. Evelyn pushed herself up and saw Hunter and Lela, her beautiful Australian Shepherd. Evelyn sighed in delight and bent down to scratch them under their necks. They closed their eyes, and then bounded with her as she walked toward the tall double-doors. The roomed seemed humid, so she walked over to the tall, glass-windowed door that led to the balcony and thrust opened the doors. A cool breeze flew into the room, and she walked outside to the balcony. Evelyn curled up on her hammock and rang a small bell. Her personal servant, Iria, came bustling in, a young woman with glossy blonde hair. She asked softly, her musical voice thrumming in the air,” Yes, ma’am?” Evelyn thought carefully for a minute, then listed her orders.
“I want raspberry ice tea, and a slice of cheesecake with a small bit of whipped cream on the top, and add some blueberries. I also need one of those soft, fiber pillows. And bring me my pair of Chanel sunglasses, the ones with the rhinestone on the left side. Also, bring me some doggy treats for Hunter and Lela. Thank you.” Iria nodded politely and hurried off to fulfill her orders. Evelyn leaned back and swayed in her hammock, petting the soft fur on Hunter’s pelt. “This is definitely the life.”
Iria came back ten minutes later, carrying three trays with all of her requests. The sunglasses were handed to her first, then the pillow, then the iced tea, a bag of doggy treats, and finally the cheesecake. The food was put onto a little glass table that sat next to her hammock. Evelyn smiled kindly. “Thanks a lot. And tell the cook thanks for the little cinnamon on the cake.” Iria laughed and said,” I’ll do that. Enjoy!” Iria left the room to do other chores. Evelyn leaned back, and propped herself on the squishy pillow. She took the cheesecake off the table and forked a little piece of it into her mouth. It was delicious, sweet and tangy. She sipped the raspberry iced tea. It was cool and refreshing, sweet and icy. She loved it. Then she looked down at her dogs, and the looked at her with pleading eyes, and Evelyn laughed.
“Oh yeah, I forgot your treats! Well, here you go. Don’t eat too much; I don’t want to have to take you guys out every day.” They nodded, and sometimes she wondered if they really understood her words. She took the small bag of treats and took four out. She chose two of them and tossed them into the air. Hunter caught his first, leaping up and catching it neatly in his mouth. Lela waited a bit longer, but soon it had disappeared into her hungry jaws. Evelyn sighed and decided to go out for a walk on the woods tomorrow, and hopefully Bella could come along too.
Iria’s voice came floating upstairs, and Evelyn wondered how her voice carried up those steep stairs. “It’s dinner time! Come on, Evelyn! Your favorites are on the table tonight!” Evelyn pushed herself off the hammock and raced down the stairs, pushing Bella aside as she did.
“Hey! No fair, Evelyn! You’re cheating!” Evelyn laughed as she ran faster.
“And since when did I ever listen to you?”
The aroma of delicious food had already reached her before she was even halfway down the stairs. She smelled halibut, cooked to its juiciest best with Cook Owen’s skill. Also filling up her senses were mushrooms with a sprig of parsley and lemon. Evelyn sighed. Even though she didn’t enjoy it in the mansion, she had to admit that she had a life most people would die to get. She had servants, and beautiful room, an endless number of awesome clothes, and a loving family. What more could anyone really ask for? But the forest was what she loved, the trees, the air, and the sense of adventure that seemed to hang in the air. That was true heaven, as far as she was concerned. The aroma continued to fill her senses as she ran down the marble stairs and jumped down, neatly landing at the bottom and ran toward the dining hall.
The dining hall was an ornate room, with paintings and flowers around her. The table was made out of fine oak, and polished with great care. The glasses were cleaned and polished each day, so the shine never faltered. She sat down at her favorite spot, when the time of the day, the sun would shine directly on her crystal cup, making the room shimmer with a rainbow of colors. Evelyn looked at her left and saw her parents seated, smiling happily and holding each others hands. They were whispering about something. Her mother had amber brown hair like her; while she inherited her father’s piercing sapphire-blue eyes. Evelyn had light, pale skin like her mother, and had the same ears as her father, medium-sized and wide, open to the world around them. She saw her sister finally reach the end of the stair, and scrambled into the dining hall. Bella had changed her clothes again, probably for the third time this day. Evelyn sighed. It seemed as if her sister could never decide what to wear. Daniel wasn’t even close to her.
“Changed again?” she teased Bella as she sat down on her spot in front of the red roses. She changed into her red American Eagle shirt, with flared, dark-wash jeans. Bella turned slightly pink and spat back,” None of your business. I am not doing this for Daniel, if that is what you’re thinking.” Evelyn raised an eyebrow. That was exactly what she was going to say. “Whatever you say.” Evelyn mumbled. She smelled the food coming towards their direction, and she immediately sat up straighter. A few seconds later, hundreds of dishes made their way to the dining hall.
The fish came first, sting on a large oval platter. Its fumes were floating out; the smoke itself was fragrant, rising up slowly in curly waves. Next came the plate of mushrooms and cooked vegetables, with some spices sprinkled onto the food. More dishes came into the hall, and Evelyn’s mouth started to water. The last dish was seated onto the table, and her mother smiled. “You can eat now, my dears.” Evelyn smiled back, picked up her fork, and reached for the fish. She hooked a small, tender piece and bit into the meat.
It was sweet and tangy, with warm meat that melted in her mouth. It was spicy and a bit salty too, and the whole combination was breathtaking. He reached in for another piece, and then started to help herself. Evelyn secretly wondered how she stayed so slender and fit when she ate such plentiful foods every day.
Halfway into the dinner, her mother cleared her throat and stood up. Evelyn looked up and so did Bella. They exchanged glances, wondering what her mother had to say. Her mother smiled.
“Evelyn and Bella, you know that my best friend, Sarah, has recently been engaged, and well…um…I know you won’t like this Evelyn but we are to go to her bridal shower and…well it’s a very fancy place so you will have to…dress up. Oh, and um…it’s tomorrow. ”
Those words made her let out a heavy groan. “Mom, you know how much I hate dressing up and going to those fancy parties where there is no one to talk to and nothing to do. Can I not go?” Her mom smiled weakly at her, and Evelyn knew the answer. She scowled. “Fine, I’ll go” Bella squealed in delight and ran over to hug Evelyn. “Yes, yes yes! This is great! Oh my gosh, this is my perfect chance! Oh, please, please, please let me put makeup on you! I beg you! You are perfect! I mean, you are absolutely gorgeous but you never try to be. If I put some makeup on you, it will be amazing! Please Ev?” Evelyn laughed and said,” Fine, I’ll let you but you can’t go overboard, alright?” Bella seem a bit crestfallen, but she smiled brightly and bounced upstairs to her room. Evelyn wondered if she was already planning what to put on her face. Evelyn groaned. “It’s going to be one long party”, she mumbled. She finished eating the rest of her dinner and ran upstairs into her room too.

The alarm ricocheted wildly, ringing and screaming loudly. Evelyn groaned and hit the snoozed button quickly before the alarm made more noise. She rubbed her eyes, and dragged herself to the bathroom.
Her hair always seemed to stay need and un-frizzy, no matter how much she tossed around in her sleep. She still combed it with a few quick strokes, and then took off her pajamas and fumbled around in one of her many huge wardrobes. She finally managed to dig out her sea-blue Hollister shirt and grabbed her knee-length tan capris. From her gigantic closet she fished out a soft white jacket. Evelyn quickly put them on and ran downstairs for breakfast.
On the smaller table for small meals and snacks, a stack of steaming tan-and-white pancakes drizzled with maple syrup was on a medium-sized glass plate. There were also two meat patties, a perfect egg sunny-side up, and a tall glass of orange juice. Evelyn sat down and started to wolf down the food. When she was done, she smacked her lips, wiped her mouth with a damp napkin, and sprinted outside and flung the doors to the mansion open.
“Ah, fresh air in the morning.” She took a deep breathe and inhaled the morning air. It was cool and smelled of dew and grass and flowers. She stretched her arms, wanting to touch he clear morning sky. Evelyn ran back upstairs, charging into Bella’s room and shaking her roughly. “Wake up already! It’s a Saturday morning and it’s 8:30! Come on! Hurry up and wake up! Plus, we have to go to Mom’s friend’s party tonight! Now hurry!” Her sister, hair already messed up by her vigorous shaking, rolled around and glared at her.
“I wanna go back to sleep, Ev! Come on, it’s a Saturday! Let me sleep in for once! I swear, I am going to have security cameras and machine guns in my room from now on.” Evelyn glared at her back. She threw off the covers and picked her up. Evelyn tried to ignore Bella’s screams as she hauled her to her bathroom and pushed her into the shower. “Now, take a shower and get dressed. Then, come downstairs for breakfast. If you are not there in twenty minutes, I will tell Daniel all your deepest, darkest secrets, understand?” Her sister looked at her with wide eyes, and then closed the door swiftly. Evelyn smiled, satisfied, and walked out the room.
In fifteen minutes, Bella was downstairs and finished with breakfast. She wore her white, slightly cropped Hollister shirt with a pink tank top underneath. She looked at her sister contemptuously.
“Ok, you got me up. Now, what do you want to do?” Evelyn shrugged. “You’re going to the forest with me. Come on,” she quickly responded at the look of horror crossing her face, “Daniel might be there. Please come?” Bella’s cheeks flushed and nodded her head ever so slightly. Evelyn grinned. “Great, now come on.” Bella’s eyes widened. “You mean, right now? Can I at least get my makeup bag?” Evelyn raised an eyebrow. “All of your makeup bags combined will weigh the same amount as an adult African elephant. And no, you can’t bring it. You look fine already. Now, let’s go.” Bella glanced back, her face clouded with doubt. “Fine, let’s go, but I want to leave a note first. Mom and Dad might worry.” Evelyn groaned. Leave it to Bella to mess up the feel of excitement and adventure, she thought angrily. When Bella returned, she grabbed her hand and sped out the door, into the autumn forest that she loved so much.
She let go of Bella’s hand as soon as they were well inside the forest, and ran as swiftly as the wind. She laughed wildly, loving this sense of freedom, racing through the trees, flying wildly, and halted to a stop, waiting for Bella to catch up. About five minutes later, she came, huffing and puffing like the wolf in Three Little Pigs. She looked at Evelyn crossly. “I am really thinking about never coming with you when you go to the forest. You always run so fast, and never wait for me either. Plus there is always…eek!” Evelyn looked at her strangely.
“What do you mean there’s always eek? What are you looking at?” She turned around and saw Daniel, with Andrew standing next to him. Daniel wore a tight, simple black shirt that stretched across his chest showing his muscles. He also wore a pair of dark wash jeans that sort of hid his Vans sneaker. Evelyn heard Bella hyperventilating. Her sapphire eyes rolled over to Andrew. He had on a bright green Hollister polo and khaki shorts. He looked really nice, Evelyn thought to herself. Then she remembered that he had asked her to the dance. Evelyn made up her mind, and slowly walked up to him. She could see that he was a little nervous now. She stopped in front of him, wondering how to say this right. Her mind floated away. She tried to count how many guy friends she actually had. Evelyn didn’t have a lot, because she knew that most of them were probably going to be her friends just for her looks. She counted in her head.
Blake, Jordan, Matt, Jake, Chris, Avery, Ethan, and Logan. Wow, that’s more than I expected. I thought I only had two or three guy friends. Oh, well. She looked at him closely. He had honey-colored eyes and sandy colored hair. He had muscles, but not too much. Dimples appeared when he smiled. Wow, he’s hot, plus he’s a really nice person. I wonder why I didn’t ask him out sooner, she admitted to herself. She smiled at him. She cast around, trying to fins the right words to say.
“Um…hey, Andrew.” He grinned lightly and said,” Hey, how are you?” Evelyn laughed.” I’m great. Listen, about the dance thing…” She saw his face cloud with worry and anticipation.
“…I’ll go with you.”
He looked at her in disbelief. “Really? You really mean it?” She smiled. “Yeah, I’ll go with you.” He tousled his sandy hair. “Wow, I never thought you would say yes. I expected you to say no. What made you say yes?” he asked curiously. Evelyn laughed again, this time louder and more beautifully.
“I won’t tell you; it’s a secret.” She put her fingers on her soft lips. Andrew laughed too. “Sure. The dance is next Friday, so do you want me to pick you up or do you want to go there by yourself?” Evelyn’s mind whirled around. She thought carefully.
“”You can pick me up…in a limo. Rent one, please.” He smiled. “Sure, what ever you say, your Highness.” She laughed again. “So, I’ll see you next Friday.” He nodded. “Yep. Well, see you soon.” He looked at her one last time, then turned to see where Daniel was. Evelyn’s eyebrows furrowed together as she tried to look for Bella. She looked at Andrew, and he shrugged his shoulders. They walked for awhile, trying to see where they went. Evelyn was getting worried as the two of them were no where to be seen. Bella didn’t know the woods as well as she did. But when she and Andrew came into a clearing, she could not believe her eyes.
Daniel and Bella were locked in a tight embrace, kissing furiously. His hands were on her hips, and she had her hands wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer. They pulled each other closer and closer, until they were practically one. Evelyn’s eyes were wide. She looked at Andrew, and his mouth was hanging open. As they kissed harder and harder, Evelyn couldn’t take it anymore.
“Bella!” Her sister snapped her head around and her cheeks were practically the color of lava, hot and bright red. Daniel didn’t look embarrassed, though. He looked pleased with himself. But he started to look uncomfortable as Evelyn stared him down.
“Um…” he said slowly after a long time,” I think I’ll go now.” He made a telephone sign with his hand and Bella nodded slightly, still red. Evelyn walked over to her, grabbed her hand, and marched back home.
Evelyn did not speak to Bella as she dragged Bella home. She was absolutely furious. How could Bella be so irresponsible and kiss someone she barely knew? It was only a crush, and now it’s going to be something bigger., she thought angrily to herself. Evelyn walked up the steps and flung open the grand doors. She threw Bella into one of the chair nearby chair and crossed her arms. “Explain yourself.” she fumed. Bella didn’t meet her furious gaze. Evelyn resisted the temptation to shake her. “What did you think you were doing?” she finally shouted, wanting to shake some sense into her. “How can you be so irresponsible, kissing someone you barely even know? I know you like Daniel, but to kiss him like that? Have you lost your mind Bella?” Bella jerked her head, as if Evelyn just slapped her. “Is that what you think? You know how I feel about him. It felt so good to just kiss him once, to be able to talk to him. Now, he will definitely notice me and maybe he’ll get with me. But you don’t have to say it like that! You don’t know ho much I love him, so just shut up and leave me alone!” Bella ran up a different set of stairs and into her room. Evelyn stared after her, and fell back suddenly. She would’ve fallen if someone hadn’t caught her. Evelyn looked up and stared into a pair of golden eyes. It was Andrew, his face clouded with concern.
“I um…saw that argument between you two. Is everything alright?” he said, concerned. Evelyn put her head on his shoulder, and felt the tears building up inside of her. “No, nothing is alright. I was mad at her for…” She told him everything, and the tears spilled out along the way. Andrew patted her back affectionately. “Don’t worry; it’s not that bad, right? I mean, maybe you were a little overboard, but you have a reason to be mad. You’re her older sister! It’s natural to be protective of her. If you want, go and say sorry for being a bit too angry. I think she’ll understand, don’t you?” Evelyn nodded tearfully, and was so glad that Andrew was such a great person. He looked at her in a strange way, and then suddenly leaned closer a bit, then closer. He wanted to kiss her!
Almost every part of Evelyn’s mind was dying to kiss him, but then she remembered her fight with Bella. How can I be mad at her if I’m doing the same thing? This is insane! Oh, but I want to kiss him so badly!
Andrew was very close now. He was a centimeter away from her lips. She could feel his sweet breath fan her face. She closed her eyes, summoned all her self control and pushed him off. He had on a bewildered expression. Evelyn shook her head. “I can’t.” she said sadly. “If I get mad at Bella for that, then I’m just a hypocrite. Sorry, but no. Maybe sometime later.” He looked disappointed, but nodded his head. He left without a word, and Evelyn crumpled to the floor, dry out of tears.
For the rest of the day Bella avoided her. Evelyn tried to make amends, but she couldn’t even get close to her to say a word. She got really frustrated when she saw Bella right in front of her in the hallway. Bella narrowed her eyes, and turned around and ran away. Evelyn didn’t even want to chase after her. She knew it would be pointless. SO she spent the day in her room, planning what to wear for her Sarah’s party.
After half and hour digging through her closets and wardrobes, her Samsung Alias rang. Evelyn groaned and pushed herself off of the closet door. She ran over to her gigantic study table and flipped open her cell phone. An excited voice responded.
“OH MY GOSH!!! YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO THE DANCE!!!” Evelyn winced at the scream and talked. “Amber, how on earth did you did out so quickly? Are you stalking me now?” said Evelyn to one of her best friends. She had known Amber since first grade, and Amber was one of those girls who did their nails with sparkly colors, went shopping every single day, and eyed cute boys every second as they walked past her.
Evelyn heard Amber’s preppy cheerleader voice through her phone. “No, I’m not stalking you, retard. You forget that Andrew is Kevin’s best friend. He practically told my brother everything the minute it was over.” Kevin was Amber’s older brother. He was a typical eighteen-year-old, an annoying jock who collected posters of women in bikinis. Evelyn raised an eyebrow. “Andrew, the seventeen-year-old, is friends with the most annoying jock on the planet. You have got to be kidding me.” Amber sighed on the other line. “I don’t get it either. Anyway, he came over and bragged how he got you to say yes to him. Is he actually that hot? I mean, he’s decent looking, but good enough for the dazzling Evelyn? Wow, he must have hypnotized you or something.” Evelyn laughed. “You make it sound like I’m the snottiest girl who says no to guys just because they’re not good looking enough? It sounds like you don’t know me at all.” Amber laughed vociferously. “So are you going to go shopping with us tomorrow?” Evelyn sighed. “Sure. I don’t have anything else to do. I’ll ask my parents.” She heard Amber’s excited squeal on the other line.
“That is great! If your folks say yes, I’ll pick you up at 1:00. Hope to see you there!” With that, Amber hung up.
Evelyn sighed and flipped her phone shut. Talking with Amber had made her a bit happier, but she wondered if saying yes to Andrew was such a smart idea after all. She sighed again, then went back to the closets of dresses.
After two hours, she found a dress that she liked. It was a sky blue floor-length dress with a strapless top, and sparkling silver ribbon was sewed onto the bodice and the waistline. The bodice was a narrow, long V, and there was a silver sash was tied onto the right side of the waist. Evelyn looked at her fairy clock. It was 3:00. Only two more hours till they had to leave. She sighed and lay the dress on her bed. Evelyn dragged herself to the bathroom to take a bath.
Evelyn heard a knock on her door. She opened it and found Bella standing there, looking embarrassed with her head slightly down. Evelyn raised and eyebrow, and asked kindly. “Why are you here? Are you here to yell at me some more?” Bella lifted her head up slightly, and said apologetically,” I…I’m sorry for yelling at you. I…I know what I did was wrong, and I’m sorry. Will you forgive me?” she said in a rush. Evelyn was taken aback. She didn’t know her sister would apologize. She thought about for a minute and nodded her head. Then she held out her arms and hugged Bella tightly, breathing in the fragrant smell of Hollister perfume. When Evelyn released her sister, Bella was smiling. She hugged her again, this time not as long as the one before.
“Oh, that reminds me. Will you still let me do a makeover on you?” Evelyn laughed. “Of course you can! I always keep my promises.” Bella was thrilled. “Well, now it’s four o’ clock, so…we have to do it now or we won’t have time.” Evelyn shrugged her shoulders and nodded. Bella smiled. “Great. Now come to my room. It’s time for makeover madness.”
A few minutes later Evelyn found herself sitting on a black leather swivel chair in front of Bella’s main mirror. It was big, with blinking light around the pink gilt edges. It looked just like the kind of mirror in the celebrity makeup mirror in the movies. Bella twirled the chair around slowly, making sure Evelyn didn’t get dizzy and studying her face carefully. “Hm…” said Bella slowly as she walked around Evelyn. Finally, she went to her “makeup” closet and rummaged around. Bella pulled out a huge, rectangle shaped box with a small keyhole on the front. She pulled out a small silver key from her pocket and inserted it inside the hole. With a little click, the box opened.
Inside the box was the most gigantic makeup collection Evelyn had ever seen. There were boxes on top that could be pulled aside to reveal more makeup underneath. Evelyn saw shimmering pots of blush, a thousand glittery tubes of lip gloss, a million shades of eye shadow, and cases of eyeliner and mascara. Evelyn blinked her eyes carefully and still saw the enormous box of cosmetics.
“How do you have the money to buy all that? And I know that is only one of your makeup collections.” Bella laughed. “I get the money from Mom and Dad. Now, let me see which colors are best for you.” Bella put the box on the counter and started working with her face.
First, she took out ten pots of blush. Bella keep murmuring to herself, as if wondering which one to choose. Then she whisked out a small brush and brushed against each shade lightly, then out it on her cheek. She then took a tissue and wiped all the colors off Evelyn cheek, and applied a light pink shade on.
Bella then swiped out three shimmering tubes of lip gloss, and kept putting each by her lips. Then she unscrewed the cap and softly applied the lip gloss on. She kept doing that for about forty minutes until Bella stepped back and smiled. “Done.” she said happily. Bella turned the chair around and Evelyn saw her reflection.
Her lips were a shiny pink, and Bella’s mascara had curled her eyebrow a bit higher and made then glossy. Her cheeks were a pale pink, and Bella had put on a sparkling silver eye shadow. Bella had used a powder exactly her skin color to cover up some rough or scarred parts or her face. Evelyn didn’t know she could look like that.
Evelyn leaned forward and examined herself carefully a few more times. Finally, he leaned back into the chair and smiled at Bella. “Thank you so much. I never knew I could look good in makeup. From now on, I’m going to go to you for makeup issues.” Bella laughed. “You like it?” Evelyn smiled softly. “I love it. Thank you so much.” Bella laughed again. “Hold on, I haven’t finished you nails yet. I still have to paint them.” With that, Bella whisked out a tube of silver nail polish and brushed them against her nails. She finished quickly and Evelyn put her hands on the counter. “Wow, you sure can make a girl pretty.” she said as she blew on her nails. They quickly dried and Evelyn hugged Bella and went back to her room. Evelyn spied a look at the clock. 4:30. Only thirty more minutes till five. Evelyn sighed, tired and frustrated and picked up her dress. She slipped the dress and felt the soft satin against her skin. Evelyn went to the bathroom to fix her hair. She curled her hair more, and put some hair glitter in it. And Evelyn decided to add a sparkling blue butterfly barrette, and that set of everything quite nicely. She walked over to her shoe closet. Evelyn walked back and forth a few times, muttered to herself, and picked out a pair of glittery pale blue high heels that matched her dress. She strapped them on tightly and stepped back in front of her fifteen foot tall mirror. She actually looked…good. Evelyn heard her mother calling her and went downstairs.
Her mother was trying to zip up her dress. It was a scarlet dress with a criss-cross strapless top. It went a bit below her knee, and her mom had matching heels and earrings. Evelyn adored those earrings. They were tiny rubies that glittered beautifully, hanging on a fine silver chain. Her mom saw Evelyn and smiled. “Dear, you look absolutely lovely. Now, come here and help me zip up this dress. I can’t get it up.” Evelyn smiled and walked down the stairs. With a big tug, she yanked the zipper up and gasped. Her mother smiled and twirled around. “How do I look?” she said with a smile. Evelyn laughed. “You look awesome, Mom. Where’s Dad? You did tell him we have to leave at five, right?” Her mom nodded. “He’s fixing his suit. Give him a few more minutes. We still have ten minutes before we have to leave.”
Her dad’s voice came floating from upstairs. “Honey, where’s my tie? I left it on the bed a few minutes ago.”
“Aaron, dear, it’s probably on the counter. You put it there when you were finding your shoes.” replied her mom in exasperation. Her dad forgot a lot of things. Evelyn heard footsteps and whirled around.
Bella was standing on the top of the main staircase, wearing a shimmering light pink dress. She had gleaming diamond earring hanging delicately from her ears, and silver heels that also shone. Bella grinned. “Do I look okay?” Evelyn raised an eyebrow and said sarcastically. “No, you look horrible.” Bella laughed, and Evelyn smiled. “Of course you look good. Now, where’s Dad?”
Right on cue her dad came stumbling through the door, dressed in a black tux with a black tie. His blonde hair was brushed back neatly. He walked to her mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Now, all of us are ready to go, right?” Bella smirked. “You’re talking about us? You were the slowest to finish dressing, you know.” Her mom laughed. “Ok, enough arguing. Let’s get into the car. The butler is waiting.” They exited out the grand doors and walked down the steps to be greeted by Carlos, smiling pleasantly. He opened the door and ushered them in. Evelyn was the last to climb in the limo. Carlos whispered into her ear. “Have fun.” And with that they drove off to Belamar Hotel.
Belamar Hotel was near Long Beach, and Evelyn thought Sarah had chosen a good place for a party. The view was great, with the sea out in front of them and the wave sound were so seductive, drawing her to the sea. It’s getting late, so that must mean that the sun will set soon, and beach sunsets are always beautiful, Evelyn thought as the car stopped and the family got out of the car. She smoothed out her dress and walked to the entrance. At once, the bellboys turned their heads and stared at her when she walked past. Evelyn rolled her eyes and pushed the door open. Bella was looking for the signs that pointed to the direction of the party.
Her mom was fumbling with her purse. “Let’s see…I remember Sarah telling me that the party would be outside, so the people could see the view. And it is a dazzling view. So…ok, I think I got it. Here we are!” Her mom pulled out a small piece of paper and mumbled to herself.
“Ok, so you have to take the elevator to the fifteenth floor, then you’ll start to see the signs and posters. Do all of you have your invitations? Because you know we can’t get in without them, right?” Evelyn held her card up, and so did Bella. Her mom held the small card up, and suddenly, three pairs of eyes stared at her father.
He stammered.” Uh…I remember I had it somewhere. I remember taking it out of the house with me…um…honey do you know where it is?” Her mother rolled her eyes. “Seriously, Aaron, if I weren’t here you wouldn’t know where our house was. I have it in my purse.” Her father laughed. “Thank you, Natalie.” Her mother handed the invitation to her father and he grinned widely, put it in his pocket, and patted it protectively. They walked into the closet elevator and Bella pressed the button numbered “15”. The elevator gave a small shudder and rose slowly. The elevator made a ding sound and the door slid open. Evelyn walked out the elevator and she tried to find a sigh. “There!” she exclaimed. Evelyn pointed at a sign that said in an elegant script,” Bridal Shower for Sarah Walker and Ryan Bryce. 6:00-11:00”. Evelyn gaped at the words. “11:00?” she said shakily. Her mother nodded. “Well,” she said in a matter-of-fact voice,” it says on your card. I thought you would have read it.” Evelyn flipped open the card and there it was, staring at her. 11:00, she thought painfully. I still have to try and finish calculus homework. Well, this is just great! she said in her mind as she walked out to a wide expanse of cement, decorously covered with flower petals of different shades. There were a collection of tables with about twelve chairs each table. The table was covered with a red velvet tablecloth, and there was a crystal vase filled with roses on each table. There was a small gazebo at the top of the area, and it was painted bright white, with flowers and leaves tied together into a vine, then twisted onto the sides of the gazebo. There were only a few people there. Evelyn looked around, trying to see a woman with silky blonde hair. Suddenly, a warm familiar voice came from behind them.
“Oh, Natalie, you’re here!” Her mother turned around and so did Evelyn. She saw Sarah, a beautiful women who looked twenty years younger than she actually was. She had long blonde hair, and icy blue eyes that seemed so warm all the time. Her skin was smooth and slightly tanned, and she always looked like she walked off the cover of Vogue. Sarah hugged her mom tightly, and she returned the gesture. After they stopped hugging, Sarah saw Evelyn and smiled. “My, my, how you have grown. You seemed like a little child just yesterday. You look beautiful, my dear.” Evelyn smiled too. Sarah had always liked her over Bella, and she thought her sister was a bit of a whore, which Evelyn thought was mean, but of course she didn’t say anything. Sarah glanced at Bella and pursed her lips. She gave Bella what Evelyn thought was a strained smile, but Bella mustn’t have seen in because she gave her a big, friendly grin. Sarah twirled, her silky white dress brushing against the floor. The dress was a beautiful floor-length white dress. She wore light silver heels and diamond earrings to match. Evelyn laughed. “You look great. Where’s Ryan? He’s here right?” Sarah nodded, smiling more.
“He’s over there, greeting some of the guests and family. I’ll go join him.” Evelyn saw Sarah walk over to Ryan and kiss him a loving kiss. She wrapped her arm on his right arm, talking to the people coming through the back door.
