Twinkle
There was a midnight candor in our eyes
as we stood shaded and utterly glowing
bathed in the shadow of a Parisian giant
more glorious than Jack’s Beanstalk
twisting with steel and iron tendrils up towards heaven
and we were certain that once we climbed it
each night star would be another golden egg for the taking.
When we thought the air could hold no more magic
sparkles spilt above our dizzy heads
like the crackling energy of a thousand lovestruck hearts
or a million winking fireflies
we were seventeen years old
living our lives as if to stumble onto that exact moment
when the Eiffel Tower twinkled above us.
Our craned necks and parted lips drained our heads
and trickled life to our limbs
as we raced through throngs of tourists and merchants
late night strollers and laid back locals
to take it in from a distance
so that we could measure our futures against this one image
and feel as if we were a part of
every postcard and fairy tale moment
that was for once not beyond our reach.

Beautiful work - it would be a solid imagist piece even without the emotion, but it's so much better with it.
I'd love to travel to Paris some day. |

| Yes actually, in the past year I went on a trip to Europe with some friends. We visited Florence, Vienna and Paris. Out of all the beautiful cities, Paris really struck me the most. It was truly magical, just the air, the people, the atmosphere. Constant inspiration :) |

| You've recently been to the European continent haven't you? It has been a few works that mentions La Tour Eiffel. Fan of La France? I rather enjoyed the word choices of the title "Twinkle", "Jack’s Beanstalk" and "golden egg". It begins as innocent as a child's tale. Keeping that in mind, the poem appears as a lifeline, each stanza respecting a different moment in age. A fairy tale moment for life. |
