Wrong Turn-Wee Challenge#38

Anyone could see, looking back, it was a bad idea. Sixteen with a baby – sounds like a cheesy ‘After School Special.’ At least there wouldn’t be any more school. Her friends, co-conspirators, were living their own drama now, doubting the wisdom of the plan that sounded so awesome last spring.

Brandi Lea Brothers uncapped the bottle of black glitter nail polish. The quiet was a welcome reprieve from the constant complaining from her mom. What right did that bitch have to criticize her, anywho? Tanya was only thirty-three – do the math. She was just scared Dale would leave and stop paying the rent. He was already pissed about the noise.

As she touched up the chipped polish on her toenails, she wondered what was going on with her friends. Were their babies cute and cuddly? Isn’t that what they expected?

Brandi’s skin prickled as she heard mewling sounds from the bedroom. Brandon Lee Brothers was hungry again. She imagined his red face, pointed head, gaping toothless mouth. Before the subtle cries became frantic screams, she closed the door and plugged in the buds from the iPod. He wasn’t going to starve. Tanya would be home soon.

Thanks all. Penguin, I read the article about the pregnancy pact and scrapped the story I was writing for this challenge and started over. I wanted to respond to this idiocy while I was still pissed off. My 13 yr old daughter thinks I preach to her too much, but I don't think I'll stop anytime soon. I was 35 when she (my first child) was born, and still was not prepared for the demands.

My first reaction was to avoid commenting - not that it isn't well-written, just a matter of personal taste (some might call them prejudices). Then, as it so happens, my wife played a CD she'd gotten from a friend. It was about "teenage clubs" in the U.S. that fit in almost exactly with the story here. Plus, NZ has more than its share of teenage unmarried mothers. Makes one wonder about the education that these kids are getting. And, as pointed out in your story, most of these teenagers have mothers who got pregnant at about the same age.

Ouch! I'm getting on a soapbox and spouting! So enough!

Guess it's better than slamming the baby against the wall to shut it up. I had a neighbor who was jailed for that. Good riddence to her!

I had a teen pregnancy-thank God my nature was better then than now. All I have now is a 59 year old baby to contend with and I block him out the same way as your MC.
