Fortress (wee story challenge)

Janyce walked into the kitchen, dying for caffeine.

“John, what’s wrong? The coffee maker isn’t working since you made coffee last.”

Silence.

“Hey, did you see what’s going on with the fish? You said you cleaned the aquarium filters. They're all curled up, lying on the bottom of the tank.”

Silence.

“The dogs are barking. I think you left them outside. Didn’t you realize the heat index is over one hundred?”

Silence.

“Well, you sure cleaned the bathtub, like you said you would. Water is splattered all over the toilet seat and floor. I see the mop handle, where’s the mop?”

Silence.

“John, do you need to have your hearing checked? That doctor will check your memory problem as well. I don’t want a deadbeat here who can’t hear or remember anything. It’s bad enough you never answer me when I speak to you.”

John, wearing headphones, noticed Janyce walk into the bedroom.

“My shrink said, ‘Build a wall between y'all and you’ll get along better.’ ”

Nice advice. Probably met the shrink at a bar.

I liked the repetition of silence. Made me wonder if John was dead (it's kind of where I felt this was leading).

Last line makes me wonder if he had selective hearing - was music actually playing...

Well done. Can't think of much to adjust on this one.

Where's the mop? - classic.

not sure that's sage-like advice from the shrink. i'd wonder what i was paying him for.

I got stressed out just reading this. it just brought back too many real-life memories. The flashbacks just won't stop now. I guess such an emotional response from me should reflect just how good this piece is.

Poor John. I see a bloody confrontation coming. She'll only walk away so many times before she yanks those things off his head. Hope he isn't holding the mop handle when that happens. I agree with Mitch. The moldy slice of dysfunctional life is upsetting. Glad to watch from a distance.
