An Ode to Fruit
Say lovely things to me,
Don’t you care about me?
Say lovely things to me!
Don’t you want to be my everything?
I twisted you up and down,
I pulled you all around.
I once tore free from you,
Thinking it was the best thing to do.
And what did you do in return?
You looked about hurt and confused,
But honest and true,
You let me go to find my muse.
You wandered as I faltered,
And we both ran away.
But when I looked over my shoulder,
You were standing in the same place.
“Love grows on trees,
Didn’t you know?”
I gasped in surprise,
“Tell me what you know!”
I was young and ready,
Didn’t life know?
I was eager and willing,
To have a love of my own!
Sweet child,
Just pick a fruit from this bough.
It doesn’t matter which one,
Just go eenie-meanie-miny-moe!
Fruit after fruit failed,
One after another spoiled.
What was I to do?
Love wasn’t mine to know?
And then I found you.
I’d avoided the tree,
I couldn’t live in fantasies.
And here I was facing you again.
“This can’t be,” I muttered.
“My heart’s playing tricks on me!”
But we grew together again,
And I couldn’t help looking closer.
There was a fruit in your hand,
Untouched by spots and blemishes.
You looked down at me and smiled,
And I realized it was right.
You took me into your arms,
And whispered into my ear.
“I’ll never let you go,
Don’t you know I love you?”
I don’t believe in fairy tales,
But I know now that love is real.
For why else had you saved that fruit,
To find that it was ours to share?
