Chapter 3
Wes! Wes!

Wes woke up with a start, and realized someone was yelling his name. He looked up to find Elise standing over his bed.

“Wes we have to leave now!” Elise exclaimed as she grabbed his cloak from the wall and handed him a energy sword as he got out of bed. “This is Lightwing. It was a good sword to its previous owner, so it should be for you as well.” Elise said. “What happened to its previous owner?” “No time to explain! W must leave now!” Elise
exclaimed.

They ran down the hallway. Wes could hear fighting behind them, but Elise didn’t stop. Why is she making such a big deal for me to escape? He wondered, concerned. They reached the end of a hallway where he saw a small hatch which was just big enough for one person to fit through at a time. “Alright Wes you through first, I will follow but you must hurry, speed is of the upmost importance right now.”

Jake was amazed with how quickly his powers had grown, Mark had said that with small amount of training they had accomplished he already was a more proficient fighter than half the people in the base. With his brand new amplifiers he would be almost unstoppable by anyone of moderate fight abilities.
He was kind of excited to test his powers, but also afraid that it was too soon to really risk getting in a fight with a berserker.

A loud crash sounded right outside his room. I guess I better go check it out, he thought apprehensively.
He grabbed his cloak and slowly opened the door.

He was terrified of what he saw; one of the berserkers was crouched over a girl who was stuck under some rubble. He seems to be distracted; this is my chance, he thought.
He opened the door quietly and then punched the berserker with his full strength right in the small of the back. The berserker crumpled onto the floor. Alive or dead Jake didn’t care one way or the other. Man that felt good, he thought to himself.

“Are you okay?” Jake asked the girl as he helped her up. “Yeah, I think so.
Thank you very much!” She exclaimed.
“My name’s Jake, What’ yours? Jake asked.
“My name is Rachel.”
Jake was struck by the beauty of the girl. She had long flowing brown hair, and an innocent face. He decided he should focus on that later; right now he needed to figure out what was going on.

“Where did that guy come from? I thought we had guards at all the entrances.” Jake wondered. “I have bad feeling that they have either been badly injured or killed. I’m really scared, I’m not great at combat, I’m a medic.” Rachel said with a worried expression on her face. “Don’t worry, I’ve had some training. I may not be the strongest fighter here but I should be able to protect you.” At least I hope so, he thought. “Thank you so much Jake” She exclaimed as she ran up and hugged him. “Yeah, it’s not problem” he said kind of embarrassed. Wow I can’t believe such a beautiful girl would want anything to do with m, he thought.

“Hey, I think I hear more of them!” one of the berserkers yelled.

“Go hide in my room Rachel, I will come get you after they’re gone” Wes said. “Be careful!” Rachel said. “I will.”

Just then two berserkers walked around the corner.

“Ha, look it’s a small fry! He isn’t even carrying any weapons. This should be easy,” said the first berserker. “I’m not so sure, I’ve heard some of them are very proficient at hand to hand combat and wear wards that block all attacks from projectiles,” replied the second. “Yeah, right, don’t be a coward; I’ll finish him in two seconds,” the first exclaimed.

The first berserker then drew his sword and charged straight at Jake. Amazingly Jake caught the blade between his hands, twisting it out of the berserker’s grip and breaking both the attacker’s hands in the process. He followed this up with a roundhouse kick to the berserker’s head which snapped his neck.

Panting Jake exclaimed, “Not so weak now am I?” The second berserker turned on his heels and ran.

“Wow! I didn’t realize you were so powerful!” exclaimed Rachel. “Honestly neither did I” Jake answered. “Come on lets get out of here, we should find somewhere safe to hide until they are gone.” Jake said. “Ok,” Rachel said and put an arm around Jake as they left.

With that they left his room and started looking for an exit. Jake wished that he had paid more attention earlier so he could have found a place to sneak out, but he decided they would just have to risk the main entrance. He was afraid he might have to fight off a few more berserkers so he was just hoping his strength would hold out.
“Jake help me!” Rachel screamed. The berserker from earlier was back and he had brought a couple of friends and all of them were running towards Rachel. He ran to help her but was attacked by two of them at the same time. Jake was overwhelmed by their combined strength. The one from earlier would have been nothing but this new ones strength was incredible, he seemed completely different than all the others. He was much larger than the other two and had long flowing black hair that was exposed by his hood which had blown back.

“Not so tough now are you” the newcomer said in a mocking voice “All you phantoms are exactly the same, weak and insignificant. Rainer take out the girl.” “But Lord Goron we could use her, she appears to be a skilled medic and we don’t have nearly enough medics.” Rainer said. “Do what I say or not even the most skilled medic will be able to save your pathetic life Rainer.” Goron growled.
“Leave her alone!” Jake yelled. “Oh, is that your woman weakling?” Goron asked. “She is my friend and I don’t want to see her harmed!” Jake exclaimed. Goron licked his lips in a grotesque manner and said, “Well we wouldn’t want that now would we, Rainer make her suffer a little bit.” “Yes, my lord.”

“No! Please leave me alone. AHHHHHHHHHHHH it hurts!” Rachel screamed.

Jake couldn’t stand hearing her pain; he felt it would drive him to insanity. He had just met this girl but he felt a connection with her already and to have her life snuffed out like this just wasn’t fair. Jake began to feel a deep power building inside of him. What is this?he wondered. It feels like I’m invincible, have I somehow tapped deeper into that energy that Elise spoke off? Let’s test this out.

He focused all of his energy into throwing the berserker who was holding him down. A massive orange blast shot from both of his hands launching the berserker into the air and causing him to fly through the wall next to them killing him on impact.

“Let her go now!” Wes shouted. Goron laughed, “You honestly think you can stop us so easily? Not even your friend Elise stood a chance against us, get him Rainer!.”
Rainer launched at Jake but he just fired another blast even more powerful than the first that completely obliterated him.

“Very impressive, Mr. Smith,” Goron said. “Yes, I know all about you. Quite the uneventful life you’ve led up until now if you ask me. I am quite curious to where you got these powers since all of our readings said you could only fight hand to hand. Unfortunately for you I don’t have time to waste on discovering your secret so I will just kill both of you right here.”

Goron threw off his robe displaying an impressive black armor most likely capable of absorbing all but the strongest of energy blasts. He had what appeared to be an energy blade on his belt. Jake hoped he didn’t have to face that because he was not wearing armor and would be cut to shreds.

“Since you are close quarters kind of opponent normally I will fight you that way, Now come at me” Goron exclaimed. He ran at Jake with speed even greater than Elise produced. It took all of Jake’s energy, even with the new powers just to block the blows that Goron was throwing. He couldn’t find a way to attack because if he stopped defending for even a second he would get clobbered. Just then Rachel hit Goron in the back with an electric blast, it wasn’t enough to hurt him but it gave Jake the opening he needed. He punched Goron square in the face which knocked him back into the closest wall. It wasn’t enough to kill him but it sure stunned him.

“Let’s get out of here” Rachel exclaimed. They started to run towards the hole in the wall that Jake had made with first berserker but Goron jumped in front of them.
“Since you defeated me fairly and didn’t finish me off I will let you go this time” Goron said. “However, next time we meet I will fight you at full power and I won’t be so merciful, you will die,” with that said Goron walked away.

“Hurry, Rachel, lets get out of here.” Jake said as they walked through the hole into the daylight.
