Going Solo - Challenge #40
The problem with going solo is that you have to do it alone. I’ve been going solo all my life. When I was five I was, ironically, one of the few kids at school to have red hair and freckles. At ten I left Catholicism and then, at eleven, Christianity altogeter. I spurned ‘Popularity’ in high school. I was the first grandchild to leave the country to attend university. My partner and I have just moved in together. I’m feeling very solo.
Going solo doesn’t just mean being alone or buggering off by yourself. It’s taking responsbility and having no one else to blame. Scary. But we were born for it, from our first steps to our deaths. Going solo is the wonderful sensation of holding your nose, closing your eyes and diving into the pool. Open your eyes and watch the bubbles rise.

hmmm certinaly sparked some lovely debate. I was siding with Wanda, but I think you have swung me your way. When you think about it we are all, always alone (solo). No-one can ever understand us 100% (except those lucky ones who can read minds).
Interesting, unique, deep-yet-simple piece.
It might need more than 150 words for full effect though.

| Louise, you little philosopher, you, I hope you haven't locked Jesus into the hordes of groups that seek to control people and get their hands on their money in his name. Most of them wouldn't know him if he walked through the front door of their so-called churches. Great piece of writing! |

| I enjoyed this piece not only for the writing in and of itself, but also for the positive vibe, the sense that we can indeed overcome adversity, that we can move on in spite of it all. Thanks! |

Thanks everyone for your lovely and helpful comments. I'm pleased this worked out as I went in a slightly different direction this time and wasn't sure how it would be recieved.
WLC and Artorius have raised a few questions though, so I shall answer. I agree with you both, babies are completely dependent on other people and this physical need turns into a mental and emotional need over time - after all, no man is an island. However the line that precedes "we were born to do it" reads as follows -
"Going solo doesn’t just mean being alone or buggering off by yourself. It’s taking responsbility and having no one else to blame."
As you can see, I'm not talking about physical loneliness or a lack of connection with other people. I refer to acts of personal responsibility and things/decisions you have to do/make yourself. For instance, Babies - whilst being heavily dependant - go on to learn how to work, how to speak and how to understand the world around them. Their parents can't help them but it is the child themselves that have to make the effort. Babies learning to progress then turn into people making their own decisions and doing their own thing.
This is my definition of going solo and I would defintely say that we were all born to do it. |
