Just Like Heaven

Teaser/Intro

What now?
Where do I go from here?
What's going to happen to me?
When will it get better?
Why me?

Ch1

"You've been diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes" Dr. Bianco told Nicholas and his worried mother. "Am-am I going to die?" The anxious 15 year old asked. The doctor slightly smiled, "No, your going to be perfectly fine. Type 1 Diabetes is common and isn't a deathly illness, if you take care of it properly. You'll just need to stay in the hospital for a few days to learn more about it and how to deal with it. Other than that, you'll be fine and could go home in about 3 days."

"Thank you doctor" Denise spoke up after being quiet for so long. She was worried sick when Nicholas had fainted in the living room; she just wanted to make sure her son would be alright. "No problem, I'll give you all a moment." Dr. Bianco said as he left the room.

"Mom, what's going to happen to me?" Nick asked. He was so scared; he didn't know what was going to happen. "Oh hunny, your going to be fine. This won't slow you down I promise." Denise reassured him. "Im just so scared." Nick said with tears forming in his eyes. Denise hugged her son tightly, "Nicholas, you'll be okay. This is just another challenge for you." Nick began to sob into his mother's small body, "Just why, why me?"

---

"Nicholas, sweetie wake up." Denise gently whispered to her son that was fast asleep in the hospital bed. He's had a rough couple of days and he was so stressed out.

Nick's eyes gently opened revealing deep bloodshot eyes. "Nicky, whats wrong?" Denise asked worried. Nick rubbed his eyes and looked at his mother with a sad look, "Everything, I'm just scared."

Denise pulled her son close to her and hugged him tightly, "You’re going to be okay, I promise you. I'll never let anything bad happen to you." She reassured her weak son. "Now lets get your stuff together, your coming home today." Denise said as she kissed her son's curly mop of hair.

On the way home they drove past that intersection, the intersection where Nick and Denise's world fell apart; 2 years ago.

"Paul, slow down. It’s starting to rain harder." Denise said quietly so her 3 young sons wouldn't hear her. "Okay, don't worry." He reassured his wife. The Jonas family was coming home from a party thrown for Denise's parent’s 45th anniversary; Kevin, Joseph, and Nicholas were fast asleep in the backseat while they drove from the small restaurant to their home in Seattle, Washington.

The rain was getting harder, the thunder louder, and the lightning more bright. Just as Paul was coming to a stop at a red light a silver Yukon truck came swerving through the intersection and plowed into the family mini van; pinning Joe, Kevin, and Paul and instantly killing them. Denise and Nicholas were the only ones who survived.

That’s why Denise want her to have to go through was so afraid of losing Nick; she didn't want to be alone. Also Nick knew how painful the loss was, especially for his mother and he didn't that again.

Those 3 days, 3 coffins, 3 wakes, 3 funerals; they broke Denise and Nick apart. It was so sudden and unexpected; it was too painful to ever live through again.

Every time they passed that intersection Denise and Nick always teared up; both trying to hold back the tears from flooding the car. They both tried to be strong for one another.

As Nick passed the intersection he thought he saw something, something transparent; something ghost like. He shook his head at the thought and focused on dealing with his newfound pain.

Ch2

“Nicholas, do you want anything? Are you okay?” Denise asked while Nick lay down in his own twin sized bed.

“Mom, I’m fine. Go to work, I’ll be okay.” He reassured his mother. He worried about her all the time; no matter what it was he worried. He worried about her worrying about him the most. The past week and a half hasn’t been easy for either of them and Nick knew his mother didn’t want to leave him-but they needed the money.

They weren’t poor, Paul had left them plenty of money to survive for years but still, Denise needed to go to work. She worked in the local Seattle Grace hospital as a psychiatrist.

“You have your insulin?” Denise questioned.

Nick smiled “Yes mother. It’s right here.” He said as he held up a syringe and then set it back to its place on his night stand. “And you know-.” She was cut off by her son. “Yes mom. Take it every 6 hours. Now would you go, I’ll be okay.”

“Okay. Call me at the office if you need me. I love you.” She said as she kissed Nick’s forehead. “I love you too mom.” He responded before she could leave the room.
Nick has been home from school since his mom is too nervous to let him out of a bubble. She felt that since he was a new diabetic he should get used to this new life he had to live-watching what he ate, what activities he did, and when & how to take his insulin. It wasn’t like he was completely hidden from school; Denise had called the school and told them everything. They said they would send his school work home with his friend Josh. Josh and Nick have been best friends since they were in diapers, Josh has been there through everything, Nick’s first girlfriend, his first kiss, his first breakup, the death of his brothers and father and now this obstacle. Josh and Nick were reserved teens, not much into the party scene, but they were satisfied with how they lived.

It was only 9:30 so Nick had a long day ahead of him. He switched the TV to channel 7 and watched Regis and Kelly-not like there was anything else to watch. Soon enough he drifted off to a deep sleep.

He slept for a good hour until his cell phone started to play ‘Six Feet Under the Stars’ by All Time Low. He looked at the caller ID and answered the phone. “Hey ma.”

“Yes, I’m fine. Okay I’ll eat. Don’t worry about me. Okay, love you too.” He hung up the phone and was left with still a long day since it was only 10:45. He started to get up from under his deep green comforter but he got a weird feeling- like someone was watching him. He looked outside his window and saw nothing unusual. He crept down the wooden stairs and looked around the house-nothing was out of the ordinary.

As he passed the kitchen his stomach started to growl. He looked in the refrigerator for something he could have and decided on waffles. He toasted them and then took them up to his room. When he walked in he dropped the plate which sent the eggos soaring threw the air.

A girl, a very beautiful girl was standing in the middle of his room. Her long blonde hair was pin straight and she had the most precious blue eyes that anyone has ever seen. She had a slender figure which was complemented by a white cotton dress and black leggings.

“WHO ARE YOU?!” Nick screamed at the girl who jumped around to look at him.

“Who are you?” She questioned back. Her voice was sweet and sounded like music.

“YOU’RE IN MY HOUSE SO I HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE!” He screamed back.

“Where am I?” She was innocent but Nick wasn’t buying it.

“HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?! YOUR IN MY HOUSE!” Now he was just starting to freak out. A stranger was standing in his room and he was alone and confused.

“I don’t remember anything. I don’t know how I got here. All I remember is sitting in school and then falling onto the floor. Now I’m here.” The look on her face was so scared and worried. Suddenly Nick felt bad for yelling at her.

“Im sorry I yelled. It’s just that I walk upstairs and a stranger is standing in my room. I got a little freaked.”

“It’s okay. I would freak out too.” She let out a laugh which made Nick feel tingly inside, her laugh was almost as beautiful as her smile.

“Um so what’s your name?” He couldn’t believe he was talking to some girl standing in his room. There were so many things wrong with this scene.

“Truthfully, I don’t know.” She said hesitantly.

“Um. Okay. Is there anyone I could call to help you out?” Now he was really scared. This girl was probably some psycho serial killer and he was the next victim.

“I don’t know. I don’t know anything.” She said with worry in her voice.

“Okay well then I really don’t know what to tell you.” Nick said as he walked more into his room but he stepped on one of the waffles that he was supposed to be eating and lost his balance. He fell going in the direction of the mysterious girl in his room but he past right through her and fell onto his bed.

Ch3

“Okay that was the weirdest thing ever!” The girl squealed in nervousness.

“WHAT ARE YOU?! YOU’RE NOT A PERSON!” Nick’s face was full of worry and fear. The girl stood there but then she made faint crying noises and Nick felt guilty again. He tried to wrap his arms around her but they slipped right through her.

“Again that was really weird.” He said to himself because the girl was still crying. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to be so rude and mean. It’s just that, it’s not normal to fall THROUGH someone. I’m just freaked out and scared.”

The girl stopped crying and looked up at Nick. “It’s okay. I’m just as scared as you.”

“Okay well who are you?” Nick’s face was full of worry. He’s never been so scared in his life-expect when he was at the doctor’s when he was diagnosed.

The girl was quiet and just stared down at her hands. She tried to cup them together but they passed through each other just like when Nick fell. “Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t know anything. I don’t know my name, age, where I live, where I go to school, my family. I don’t know anything.” She started to cry again but this time it was a little louder. Nick felt horrible because there was nothing that he could do and he hated not being any help. It made him feel useless.

“You don’t remember anything? Do you remember where you were before you came here?” He searched her face for an answer but the tears continued to stream down her cheeks while she shook her head ‘no’.

The two stood there in complete silence not knowing what to say or do. What do you say to an angel or a ghost or whatever she was? Nick thought it was a dream but after he had pinched himself he realized he was very awake.

“Okay so I guess you’ll just stay here until we figure everything out.”

She turned to him and their eyes locked “Won’t your family be freaked out when they see some random angel/ghost freak in your room?”

“You’re not a freak. And it’s only my mom and she won’t care. She’s a real understanding person.”

The girl nodded “I’m just scared. My memory is completely blank. I don’t even know what town I’m in or why I’m here in your house. I don’t get why I ended up here.”

“I don’t know either but we’ll figure it out. Now that we know that there’s something wrong, we’ll be able to fix it. Everything’s going to be okay.” It sounded like he was convincing himself and it was working because he did believe everything would be okay. Nick’s gone through a lot, meeting an angel/ghost is nothing compared to the other events in his life.

“You really believe everything’s going to be okay?” Nick nodded “How can you be so sure? I’m not real for Christ’s sake! This is completely ridiculous; it’s like something out a movie. It’s not reality.

Nick walked close to here “Just stay calm. Sooner or later we’ll figure things out. For now, we’ll just hang out. I’m expecting my friend Josh to come over soon, he’ll probably be a little freaked when he finds out we have no idea who you are but he’ll get over it.”

The girl nodded again. Nick began to realize she was shy or she could just be quiet right now because she has no memory of her life.

“You don’t say much do you?” He laughed trying to lighten the mood which worked because the girl smiled.

“I’m just confused. I’m not usually quiet.”

Nick’s eyes widened “You remembered something! You remembered that you’re not quiet.”

The girl’s smile grew brighter “YOUR RIGHT! Well that’s a start. Now we just need to figure out what my name is.”

Nick began to laugh as did the girl. He was still freaked out because he still had no idea who this girl was but things were getting loose and he had a feeling things were going to be okay; they always were.

Nick sat on the bed and turned on the television seeing as they had nothing else to do. The girl couldn’t sit down so she floated above the floor.

“That looks like fun.” Nick said nonchalantly.

“To tell you the truth, it kind of is. I always wanted to be able to fly and now I guess I can.” She laughed again but then sharply stopped. “I REMEMBERED SOMETHING ELSE!”

“I KNOW! We are making excellent progress.”

They both started to laugh again but were cut off by the slamming of the front door and footsteps coming down the hallway.

“That must be Josh.”

“Yo Nick. Who are you talking too?” Josh walked in to see Nick laying on the bed staring at the place where the girl was supposedly sitting.

Nick was at a loss for words. Josh couldn’t see the girl.

Ch4

“Oh no one. Just yelling at the stupid people on General Hospital. I swear Carly is such a psycho!” Nick tried to play it off while the girl floated above the floor in utter shock.

They were once again officially freaked.

“Okay whatever. So how’s the diabetes thing going? Hanging in there?” Josh asked as he sat down next to Nick on the twin sized bed.

“Yeah it’s working out okay. I mean it’s not a major ordeal, I just have to take my insulin every 6 hours or so. I could really go to school but you know my mom, keeping me in a plastic bubble. So how’s life on the outside world; I feel like I haven’t seen daylight in a week.”

Josh’s face perked up “Oh shit something crazy happened yesterday in school. It was like insane.” Nick lied back onto his pillow signaling Josh to continue. The mysterious girl floated closer to Nick and Josh; Nick glanced over to her and she smiled, he smiled, and then Josh looked confused.

“Nick, what are you smiling at?” Josh’s voice had a hint of curiosity and a hint of annoyance.

Nick’s head snapped to look at his bewildered friend. “Nah nothing; just thinking about Amanda Reilly. Do you remember her? She was so good.”

Amanda Reilly was the local slut; every boy got with her including both Nick and Josh. Supposedly she was the best kisser Seattle had ever seen.

“Yeah she was good.” Josh got all starry eyed as he looked up at Nick’s ceiling. “Okay, well enough about that. Let me tell you about the crazy school thing.”

Nick nodded and Josh crossed his legs Indian style and faced Nick. “Okay well we got this new girl last week who happens to be gorgeous; she wasn’t really hot but just was really beautiful, almost angel like. Long blonde hair and the deepest blue eyes you’ve ever seen-it was enough to drive everyone wild.”

Nick’s jaw dropped as did the girl’s; Josh had just described her. Both of them paid more attention to Josh whose face read that he knew he was missing something but he shook it off.

“Okay we’ll yesterday we were sitting in Math B and then all of a sudden the girl passes out; just completely sprawls out on the floor next to her seat. It was crazy. Mrs. McClintock came running over like a loony and sent Mickey G to get the nurse. The girl had a pulse but was so pale she looked like a ghost. Then the paramedics came and supposedly now she’s in a coma; it’s wild.

Nick’s mind wasn’t registering what was going on. Was it the same girl who sat in front of him or was it just a coincidence? He could tell by the look on the girl’s face that she was convinced it was her; her face was full of angst and fear and once again it was breaking Nick’s heart.

“What was the girl’s name?” He asked almost hesitantly but then caught himself because Josh was smart and Nick knew that he would find out something was up.

“Angela, Angela Manning.”

The girl’s delicate blue eyes flooded with tears and she began to sob into her hands. Nick wanted to wrap his arms around her but he couldn’t; 1 because she was a ghost and 2 because Josh was there. But he had his answer; the mysterious girl who had just wandered into his room was named Angela Manning and she was a ghost.
“Do you know why she ended up in a coma?” Nick needed answers.

Josh grabbed the remote control and changed General Hospital to TRL. “Yeah something with diabetes; it was a diabetic coma.”

Nick’s breath became almost not there while Angela’s sobs grew higher pitched and he couldn’t believe Josh didn’t sense that she was there.

“That’s weird.”

Josh nodded “Yeah it is kind of weird since you were just diagnosed and now this girl goes into a diabetic coma. You just better listen to your mom for once and take care of your insulin.”

“Yeah, after this I definitely will. So is that all the crazy news you have for me?”

Josh laughed as he got up off the bed and grabbed his book bag “Yeah nothing else major has gone on. I’ll keep you posted. Just get better because I miss my right hand man. I don’t mean to get all sappy on you but when you said you had diabetes I got scared. It scared me and I hate being scared. I had the same feeling that I had when I heard you got into an accident and when my mom told me that your dad and brothers died. I don’t know what would happen to me if you were gone.” His voice started to crack telling Nick he was going to cry.

Nick and Josh always had some kind of break down when something horrible happened. When Paul, Kevin, and Joe passed away Nick and Josh spent almost 4 days cooped up in the tree house in Josh’s yard sobbing. No one knew this, expect for their parents, and both of them knew that it always helped.

But right now, this break down couldn’t happen; Angela was in the room and they wouldn’t be able to be really open with each other with someone else watching them.

“I know Josh. It’s been hard; life’s been hard. But you know that this is just something else we have to overcome. I’ll be okay-you’ll be okay; everything’s going to be okay. I’m going to take my insulin and live an almost perfectly normal life.”

Josh wiped the few tears that had escaped from his eyes and nodded. “I know, just be careful. And here are all your books-have fun!” He threw an extra book bag onto Nick’s bed and ran out of the house.

Nick started to laugh but was cut off by Angela floating above him.

“WHOA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

“I’m trying to get your attention. Now that we know who I am could we get down to business? Why can’t your friend Josh see me and why am I even here?”

This is where her bitchy side came out; just because you’re an angel doesn’t mean you don’t have a bitch deep down inside you.

“Yes we know you’re Angela Manning. I don’t know why Josh can’t see you but I have an idea on why you’re here.”

“Okay so tell me Captain Obvious.”

Nick’s face turned serious “I’m a new diabetic and I’m assuming you’ve been diagnosed for quite a while. You went into a diabetic coma probably because your blood sugar was over the moon. You’re here to show me how to take care of myself. You were sent to me.”

Ch5

Angela and Nick spent every waking moment together. They were doing their best to try to get her full memory back and they had succeeded. She remembered everything from her favorite food to her favorite band and they both realized they had a lot in common.

Their favorite foods are pizza and peanut butter; favorite movie is Finding Neverland; favorite book is Kite Runner and a bunch of other things.

Also, they both have lost a parent. Angela’s father died when she was 4 years old; he was saving a man from a burning building; he was a firefighter. She had told Nick she knew that he had done a good deed when he died but she wished he didn’t go back into that building because he would’ve still been here. He would’ve been here when she was diagnosed and he would be here for everything else. She had started to cry and Nick wanted to comfort her so badly, but he couldn’t, he just cried with her reminiscing on his own lost family.

His mother had no idea about Angela; she was clueless. Angela slept, well floated, next to Nick’s bed and she went with school with him during the day. Back in the hospital, she was still in a diabetic coma while her soul floated around following a new diabetic.

Nick had found out that she was diagnosed when she was 6 years old and she’s gone into 3 diabetic comas since then. Those only lasted 2-5 hours but this one was different; it was fatal. And she wanted to do everything she could to make sure that didn’t happen to Nick.

She made sure Nick took his shots when he was supposed to, if he was getting ready to go play a game of soccer she made sure that he had his insulin with him, if he wanted to eat a cupcake she raised her eyebrows and he put it back. She was like a mother being with him 24/7, but he didn’t mind.

He was falling for her.

He was falling for his guardian angel.

Everything she did make him weak at the knees; the way she smiled, laughed, and cried. He loved the way her eyes would get some sort of sparkle in them when she told him not to do something or when they looked like oceans right after she finished a good cry. He appreciated what she was doing; how she was guiding him not to end up like her.

Right this second, they were both relaxing watching General Hospital; it was their guilty pleasure. The episode was about a child, Michael, being in a coma. It wasn’t a diabetic coma; he had gotten shot in the head. But still, his parents were in a panic as were the other people who loved him. This was hitting close to home and Angela started to cry thinking about what her mother must be going through.

“Ang, don’t cry.”

She looked up at Nick, her crystal eyes shining through the tears. “I can’t help it Nick. My mother must be a wreck right now. I just want to go back.”

Nick pondered for a moment while she was still crying. He wanted to help her so badly but how do you get an angel back into her body? Finally it clicked in his head.

“I don’t know how to get you back to yourself but we could go visit you? I know that sounds so weird but its true. We could go to the hospital and just visit, ya know?”

Angela nodded her head. “That sounds good. Could we go now?”

“Anything for you.” Nick smiled at her and she smiled back. He didn’t know if she had feelings for him but he was starting to drop hints hoping she would get the picture. He really liked her.

Nick walked downstairs with Angela close behind. “MOM!” He called out and she came running from the basement with a laundry basket in her hand.

“What’s wrong?” She asked with panic in her voice.

“I’m fine. I’m just going to walk down to the Seattle Grace. Remember the friend I told you about? The one in a coma?” Denise nodded her head. “Well I’m going to go visit her. Is that okay?”

“That’s fine. Do you want me to drive you?”

Nick shook his head “No, I need the fresh air. Love you mom.” He kissed her cheek and she responded with ‘love you too.’ Then Angela and he made there way out of the house and toward the direction of the hospital.

“Are you okay?” Nick asked after a few minutes of silence. The cool wind blew against his face but Angela couldn’t feel it.

“I’ll be okay. I just want everything to go back to normal. I miss my normal life. This is so crazy. I’m a freaking ghost! It’s just like not real.”

“I know but eventually things will go back to normal. I’m getting more use to this diabetes thing so maybe once I’m all settled, you’ll be sent back.”

“Yeah I guess.”

Another round of silence settled upon the two as the hospital came into view 2 blocks down.

“But you know, something good came out of this whole fiasco.” Nick hinted at waiting for her response. She looked up at him with confused eyes; oh how he loved those eyes. “What good thing?”

He looked into her eyes like he was burning a hole “I met you.”

Her face blushed a little bit and she turned away from his hard glare. “Yeah, that’s a good thing.”

Nick wanted so badly to kiss her at that moment but he knew he couldn’t; it wasn’t possible. He was skeptical on if he should just come out and say he had feelings for her but he wasn’t that type of boy.

“Nick, I like you.” She blurted out which made him crack a smile.

“Well that’s nice.” He paused for a moment waiting to see her reaction. Her face got nervous and she looked like she just saw a ghost. Ironic.

“Because I like you too.” She breathed a sigh of relief.

“Now that that’s settled, let us go visit you.” Nick said tripping over the last words because it was so strange to say that.

Angela nodded and followed Nick through the automatic doors. She, along with Nick, hated the smell hospitals had. It gave them both the goose bumps.

“Hi, I’m looking for Angela Manning’s room. I’m a friend of hers’.” Nick said to the plump little nurse at the front desk.

“She’s in room 456. It’s on the 3rd floor.” She said with a smile.

“Thank you very much.” Nick then went toward the elevator with Angela trailing behind.
Once they found the room Nick let Angela go in first to have a few moments with herself. He watched how the tears poured from her eyes as she stared at her own lifeless body laying in the cold hospital bed. She wanted nothing more to be put back into her body and to continue living her life. She sobbed, letting the tears fall down her cheeks, until Nick walked in and stood at her bedside.

He saw how hopeless and helpless she looked in the bed but then he looked at her standing next to him and he had to pinch himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming; was this actually happening? He wanted to touch her since he met her so he reached his hand out toward her body and placed his hand on top of his. The Angela standing next to him jolted her body because she had felt his hand on hers. She felt his touch.

“You have no idea how long I just wanted to hold your hand.” He said to the angel Angela.

“You don’t know how long I’ve wanted you to hold my hand.” She said her voice cracking with each word.

Before Nick could say anything else a nurse walked into the room.

“You know, they’re thinking about taking her off life support.”

Ch6

“There what?” Nick lost his breath for a moment.

“Her mother is a complete wreck and she doesn’t want her to suffer anymore. She feels as if it’s easier if she just takes her off.” The plump nurse was now fully standing in the room with her back leaned against the wall.

“But she can’t do that! It’s only been a few months.” Nick looked at soulful Angela who was hysterical crying near the bedside of her body.

“I know. We’ve all tried to convince her to wait a little longer; these diabetic comas usually don’t last very long but this time it’s really different. Something isn’t letting her come back to her mind and we don’t know what it is.” Nick couldn’t understand how the nurse spoke so calmly about such a serious subject.

“I don’t get how she would just…let her daughter die.” He choked out the last few words.

“I guess its hard losing a child and seeing them suffer like this. Everyday her mother comes and just sits here praying that her daughter would come back to her. It’s really a tragedy.”

Nick shook his head at a loss for words. “I wish there was something I could do. I feel horrible.”
“Just keep praying. Hopefully she comes back soon or it might be too late.” Then the nurse left the room.

Nick walked back to Angela’s peaceful body lying in the hospital bed. He grabbed her hand again and kissed it. The other Angela smiled when she felt Nick’s lips on her own hand.

“Were going to get you back. I’m not going to let you die.”

Angela started to cry again; her emotions were taking over her. She couldn’t stand the thought of her own mother killing her. It was so unlike her mother but she could only imagine the pain her mother was feeling. It was her own fault; her family was going through all sorts of pain and she was off having a grand old time with Nick.

“It’s your fault.” Her faint words barely left her lips.

“What?” Nick looked up at her and saw her blue oceans wet with tears.

“It’s your fault I’m going to die. If you could just take care of yourself I wouldn’t even be here. I can’t believe your being so selfish! I should’ve been back in my body months ago but NO! I HAD TO STAY WITH YOU! I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M GOING TO DIE BECAUSE OF YOU!”

“Angela, calm down.”

“I’M NOT GOING TO CALM DOWN! I CAN’T BE HERE ANYMORE! I WANT TO GO BACK TO HER!” She pointed to her body. “IT’S NOT FAIR! I’M NOT COMING BACK WITH YOU! JUST LEAVE NICK! I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU ANYMORE!” She continued to cry and scream thinking of the reasons she was going to be gone forever.

“Angela. Don’t say that. Were going to get you back. I promise.”

“YOU’VE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR MONTHS NICHOLAS! JUST LEAVE!”

Nick’s eyes started to well with tears. He never thought that he could be the cause of Angela being in the coma but now, her words were cutting him like a knife. He didn’t want to be the cause of a lost life. He didn’t want Angela’s mom to experience the lost she did when Angela’s father died or experience the pain his own mother felt when she lost 2 of her children.

He walked toward the door and then took a second look back at the person who has become so much to him.

He didn’t want to be the cause of so much pain.

Nick left the hospital in such a hurry he had caused a collision in the hallway. His emotions began to take hold of him. The tears flowed without stopping down his cheek bones as he ran toward his house. The sky grew dark and the clouds opened up letting the rain fall against the pavement underneath his feet. His tight curls now drooped over his face blurring his vision even more. The rain soaked his body and it perfectly matched his being right at this moment.

It was as if God knew how he felt at this point. Rain and storms prevented people from getting to where they were going and doing the things that they needed to do in life. Nick was Angela’s rain. He had blocked her from getting better; he thought that he still needed her when he really didn’t. He tried to convince himself that he wasn’t better and that he needed a mentor.

He was her rain.

Nick now sat on his front steps letting the rain fall on him. The thunder cracked and he saw a lighting bolt in the distance. He shook his head and screamed to the sky.

“WHY CAN’T YOU LET HER GO BACK! JUST LET HER BE! LET HER GO BACK TO HER MOTHER AND LET EVERYTHING BE NORMAL! I’LL BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT HER! SHE DESERVES TO LIVE HER LIFE! I LOVE HER AND I NEED HER TO KEEP ON LIVING!”

He couldn’t believe what he just said. He loved her. How is it possible to love someone you met not less those 6 months ago? Is it even possible to love an angel?

He didn’t care if it was possible or not. He loved Angela and he definitely didn’t want to be the one who took her life away.

In the middle of this storm Denise walked outside to see her son broken apart.

“SWEETIE! COME INSIDE! YOU’RE GOING TO GET SICK.” She screeched at him. She helped Nick off the ground and guided him inside. The minute his feet touched the brown carpet of the living room, he collapsed into his mother’s arms.

Ch7

“Angela. Angela. Angela. Angela.” Nick repeated over and over again into the open field he was running through. He saw her figure in the distance. She had on a long white gown and her blonde hair was flowing freely through the breeze that took to the air.

Nick ran toward her but she just stood there frozen in time. A smile was plastered on her face as she saw Nick running frantically to her.

“Angela… what are you… doing here?” Nick spoke between trying to gasp for air. His throat was becoming thick and he was having trouble difficulty breathing.
“I wanted to see you. I’ve missed you Nicholas. Why did you leave?” Her voice was so pure and innocent.

“You… you told me to leave. You screamed at me to leave and never come back. You said I was going to kill you.” Nick’s voice was full of bewilderment.

“I would never tell you to leave. I love you Nicholas.” She opened her arms for a hug and Nick reluctantly latched on. He could touch her and it felt so good. He loved holding her in his arms; it felt so right.

When he pulled back her face was abnormally pale and her blue eyes were losing their sparkle. “Angela, are you alright?”

And with those words she collapsed onto the now dead grass that stood beneath them.

Nick shouted for her to wake up but when he did, nothing came out. He was mute; he was stuck inside some kind of sick world where he couldn’t get out of. Angela needed help but since he couldn’t speak and no one else was there, she died. He knew this because the sound of a flat lining heart monitor started to buzz in his ears.
--
He opened his eyes to see white. Everything was white. He walked around the whiteness, confused and scared. He didn’t know where he was or why he was there but it scared him; it made him nervous.

While walking around he saw a few people he recognized; that old neighbor from down the block, his mother’s great aunt, and his great grandfather.

Then he saw his father. He saw Kevin. He saw Joe. He ran toward them and when they realized it was him, tears filled their eyes. He latched on to his father and brothers and sobbed. He couldn’t believe he was there with them. After such a long time of grief and lonesome, he was with them again.

“I love you.” He said to them. They whispered I love you too.

“You can’t stay here.” His father said.

“Why not? I’m here with you and Joe and Kevin. It’s perfect. We could be a family again.”

Joe and Kevin shook their heads. They pointed down and when Nick looked he saw his mother grieving in the hospital. She looked like she hasn’t eaten or slept in weeks. Her eyes were bloodshot and tears flowed from her eyes like waterfalls.

“Mom needs you. She lost us. She can’t lose you too.”
Nick nodded his head knowing that he couldn’t leave his mother. It would hurt too much. He had to go back. He hugged his father and brothers a final time but not before telling them that they would be together again.

He started to walk away but then something caught his eye; a man with blonde hair and crystal blue eyes holding his daughter. When he set his daughter down he saw that it was Angela. He watched closely as Angela’s father whispered something to her, then he pointed down, and Angela began to weep. Nick assumed he had showed Angela her mother grieving, just like his mother.

Angela’s father told her to go back and when Angela looked up she saw Nick staring back at her. She hugged her father for what seemed like an eternity and than ran to Nick. She jumped into his arms and he held her close. This time when he set her back down she didn’t collapse but the two of them left the whiteness together… hand in hand.

Ch8

Nick opened his eyes very gently. The light hitting his face hurt intensely and his entire body was sore. He looked over at the chair next to his bed and saw his mother sleeping peacefully. Denise opened her eyes and saw Nick staring back at her. Tears immediately filled her eyes and she hugged Nick so close to her body.

“Nicholas. You’re awake. I can’t believe you’re awake.” Her words cracked and she continued crying.

“Ma, what happened?” His voice was full of confusion and nervousness.

“You went into a coma. Your blood sugar was ridiculously high. You’ve been in a coma for almost a month. I thought I was going to lose you forever. But you’re alright. I can’t believe you came back to me.” She hugged Nick again and this time he wrapped his arms around his mother and sobbed into her shoulder. Everything was coming back to him; Angela yelled at him, he ran home and than collapsed, then he saw Angela, then his brothers and father. It was all too wild to be real.

“Mom, I saw dad, Joe, and Kevin. I went to heaven mom. Did my heart monitor flat
Line at one point?”

Denise’s face grew distorted when he mentioned her husband and sons. “Yeah baby. You flat lined for a little while but then you came back to me.”

“Yeah, it was them. I saw them and they’re doing great. They said I couldn’t stay with them. They said I had to come back to you. They said they loved you.”

Denise started crying and hugged Nick again. He knew he could never leave his mom; it would hurt her and him too much.

“I’m going to get the doctor. I love you Nicholas and I don’t know what I would do if you weren’t here.” She kissed the top of Nick’s head and left the room.

Now all he needed to do was find Angela.

As Nick was getting lost in his thoughts the door creaked open. He snapped his head up and looked at the beautiful girl standing there. Her eyes were as blue as ever and her hair was freshly highlighted. The white dress that she’s been in for the past months was replaced by dark jeans, a pink tank top and a black vest. She looked absolutely stunning.

“Angela?” Nick questioned with a bit of hesitation.

“Nicholas.” Her voice was as pure and angel like as ever. She walked closer to him and he got the warm fuzzy feeling in his stomach. When she was standing at his bedside he grabbed on to her hand and squeezed it tightly.

“I’ve wanted to touch you for the longest time.” His voice was nothing above a whisper.

“I’ve wanted you to touch me.” She sat in the chair his mother had previously been in and stared into his big brown eyes.

“I was in a coma.” He said.

“I know. My mom and your mom formed some sort of bond when we were in the comas. I’ve been awake for almost 2 weeks now and I visited you everyday praying you would wake up. I wish I would’ve told you to take your insulin instead of yelling at you to leave. It’s my entire fault.”

“No its not! Don’t say that. It’s definitely not your fault.”

“I know but I still feel guilty.”

“Don’t. I should’ve known better.” Then a silence filled the air but it was nothing like an awkward silence.

“I had the weirdest dream while I was in the coma.” Nick said.

“SO DID I! I was in a field and you were there. We hugged and then you collapsed. I tried to get help but I couldn’t talk. Then I heard beeping that sounded like a heart monitor.”

Nick’s jaw dropped and eyes widened, “I had the exact same dream! But it was you that collapsed, not me.”

“That’s really strange. Then I saw us in heaven. You were with your brothers and father and I was with my dad. I wanted to stay with him but he showed me my mom and told me I had to go back. I looked up and saw you standing there.” She said while she wiped a few tears from her face.

“I had the same exact dream. But yet, I don’t think it was a dream. I died for a minute or two and that’s when I saw my dad and brothers. You must’ve flat lined too.”

Angela nodded her head, “Yeah, I did. This entire thing is so strange.”

“Yeah it definitely is. It’s like were meant to be or something.” Nick stared into her ocean blue eyes and smiled. She smiled back and it was like butterflies were released in his stomach.

“Nicholas, I didn’t mean any of the stuff I said when I was an angel. The truth is, you scared me. I developed these feelings for you that I never felt before and it scared me. I didn’t know if you felt the exact same way and I didn’t want to get my heart broken and then die on top of that. I love you Nick. I truly and honestly love you.”

Nick smiled and it was like the entire world got a little brighter. “I love you too Angela. I love you too.” And with that he took her head in his hands. Their bodies moved closer to each other until they felt their breaths on each other’s faces. They both smiled right before their lips connected.

Fireworks were set off as the kiss deepened. Her hands ran through his curls while his hands stayed at her jaw line. That kiss was everything they ever wanted and it would be all they ever needed.
