Can I Get a Witness

"Call the next witness."
"Call Mrs. Mavis Macnish."
"Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"
"That depends."
"Witness, you must take the oath!"
"How can I swear to tell the truth before I've heard the questions? I mean, what if you ask me something really, deeply personal? I'm not about to tell the whole truth about my sex life. I don't want to go to prison."

This is why people can plead the fifth, which basically means the witness can opt not to answer a question if it incriminates themselves.

Hmm...must be some sex life in order to go to prison for it!

I love the story told through the dialogue alone. It's conveyed very nicely and I like it. It also conveys a good message to it. We should always know the questions before we promise to answer it properly.

No. No you can't get a witness. Because sex is public. Everyone knows so.

I've often imagined myself in that situation, and the only honest answer would be "that depends' or "maybe". Good, short story.

Sounds interesting! This piece has a stand-alone message but could also be the beginning of something.
