Paranoia
"Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep." Steven Stills , For What It's Worth
I can understand where the paranoia which seems rampant in today's society comes from. Media, especially broadcast media, which need to fill up their 24/7 format with something attention-getting, are constantly warning us about the newest dire threat. If HIV or the terrorists don't getcha, then the bird flu will!! (What ever happened to the Ebola virus, which was forecast to wipe out West Central Africa a decade ago? Or the Hanta virus, which threatened to decimate Native American communities in the Southwestern states a decade before that?) Do you know anyone who has caught bird flu?
Surely informed, intelligent people might be expected to see beyond the selfserving purveyance of such Jeremiahcal pronouncements.
But I guess that there have always been and most likely always will be those whose penchant is to discern a future filled with "doom and gloom."
So you decide - will you live a life of joy and adventure or a life of trembling dread?

:-) Paranoia - you never know when someone or something is out to get you!
Seriously, though, fear is a great motivator, even more powerful than sex, and the press is really there to help push it as a justification for something or other, whether it's terrorists or global warming. I'm not saying the press is controlled, but it often seems to justify what are really stupid decidions by the politicians, rather than reporting "the facts and just the facts" or giving a reasoned opinion on the facts.
Re: "Surely informed, intelligent people might be expected to see beyond the selfserving purveyance of such Jeremiahcal pronouncements."
Where do those intelligent people get their information? From "the selfserving Jeremiahcal pronouncements"! It's a viscious circle! |

It comes down to fear. You can't let fear dominate your life. Then again, fear is a good thing. Phil brings up a valid point: paranoia has been proven to work many many times. Sometimes its a good thing.
But, you have to be prudent. |

| Sometimes paranoia is warranted. When you consider that the "Spanish Flu" pandemic of 1918-19 killed more people than WWI, WWII, Korean War and the Vietnam War COMBINED and the "Bird Flu" has the antigenic potential to mutate to cause a worse pandemic given the global nature of travel. I personally watch the possibility closely. The difference with Ebola is its lethality prevents spread; it kills its host too quickly. Hanta is only an opportunistic nuisance (unless you get it). |
