A sad state the situation we’re in
We can’t begin to break the
fearful chains of tyranny
From a lack of romance to
supplemental liberty
I’m starting to wonder if
there’s something wrong with me

The names are on the walls
there are holes between the stalls
and all these stupid scandals
leave self-righteousness appalled
Somewhere along the road the engine stalled
and now we're left deserted
in a desert on our own

A sad state the nation we defend
We can’t pretend that
honor binds us in the end
From endangered species to
extinct mysteries
I’m starting to think
I’m the only one who sees

The boots are in the hall
at Death’s beck and call
and all these pointless tragedies
find us walking tall
Somewhere along the road the engine stalled
and now we are abandoned
the return we can’t recall

A sad state the shape you’re in
but there you go again
eating more than your fair share
From the antiseptic kitchen to
your squalid chair
I’m almost convinced
we cannot repair

Words obscured by the squall
time slowed to a crawl
and all these vicious criminals
protective of the law
Somewhere along the road the engine stalled
and now we’re left to languish
with no help to call upon

Is it chaos that destroys us?
Or is it merely God?
