Fragments I- The Funeral

“I can’t believe he’s gone,” Rachel wept. Her mother gently squeezed her slender wrist beneath the black linen cuff as three rifle shots fired. Rachel watched through tears when the flag was folded and the union tucked.

“This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation …” First Lieutenant Dawson said before handing her the folded flag. Mist shrouded “Taps.”

Very poignant, Phil. One wee picky thing: three uses of 'as' kind of stand out in a piece this short. Maybe re-think one of them?

Good stuff, though.

A sad and unfortunate situation. I wonder though, if dropping the dialog at the beginning would dial up the poignancy of "Rachel wept."

WQell written indeed. I see that this is but one of four or so Fragment stories you have written. I'm looking forward to reading the others.
Take it that Dawson was a decorated officer that was given full miliatry hons when he passed away.
