a day by the lake

The lake was beautiful at this time of day. The sun slowly setting cast an orange glow over the water, making it look like a fire burned in its depths. The lazy, almost inaudible hum of midges could be heard over the gentle lapping of water. It had been another scorching hot day.

Jane Grant lay on a tartan rug, the music from her mp3 player almost lulling her to sleep. She had spent the day doing nothing. Absolutely nothing. It had been bliss. As the sun sunk lower over the horizon she finally decided to head home. She picked up her belongings and walked the 50 yards to her car. Once behind the wheel she heaved a heavy sigh, started the motor and set off.

The traffic was heavy on the way home, rapidly bringing Jane out of her relaxed state. She started cursing at other motorists as they cut in front of her, banging her hand on the steering wheel. Come no morons, come on.

She finally pulled into her drive an hour after leaving the lake. She could feel her shoulders had tensed up again from the drive. As she opened the front door she heard screaming coming from inside.

'Dad, tell him. It's mine'
'It's not she nicked it off me.'
'Both of you calm down. Your mother'll be home soon. She's had a long day at work and she doesn't want you two running her ragged.'
'Ow! Get off me! Dad he hit me.'
'I didn't. She hit me'

Jane paused before opening the door, took a deep breath, and walked in.

'Mummy Jason hit me'
'I didn't she's lying. She hit me'
'I didn't he nicked my colouring book'
'It's my book, not hers'
'Ok. Calm down. Let me at least get through the door. Marion let him use the book. Jason don't hit your sister'
'Hello dear. Interesting meeting?'
'Not bad. Didn't get much resolved though. We're meeting again tomorrow. I'm off for a shower love.'

Jane walked upstairs and undressed. She turned the radio on and went through to the en-suite bathroom. As she was showering she heard the weather forecast for tomorrow. Another hot sunny day. She smiled to herself. Another 3 days of her holiday to go, and it looked like being a good week. Andy wouldn't understand if she told him she just needed some time to herself. This way everyone was happy. She tipped her head back and let the water fall on her face. Who knows, she thought to herself, I might even have a swim in the lake tomorrow

Ah yes, sometimes the things gone unknown are what's best for all. Nice little snapshot look at parenthood. Really good transition you have from the relaxed lake to the shitty drive to the screaming kids. I could feel myself tensing up. Much enjoyed, Neil.

Can you write a follow-up where Jane drowns Marion and Jason in the lake? x
