Chapter one of a new book i'm working on.
Chapter 1:
"ALLEN!" Samantha yelled up at me as I laid on my bed, a pillow over my face as my iPod blasted breakup songs. I don’t know why she insisted on calling me Allen, my real name was Elisabeth, but the stupid woman my dad had married after mom left insisted on calling me Allen. Allen this, Allen that. "Allen get your ass down here!" Groaning lightly, I pulled myself up off the bed and paused my iPod before heading downstairs, pulling my jeans up and shirt down as I did so. I turned to face whoever it was who had insisted on visiting me on the worst possible day. My eyes slowly adjusted to the light, taking in the chin length black hair, the ice blue eyes so different from my own forest green ones, yet similar in many ways. His pale skin not quite as glow-in-the-dark as mine, but pretty close. He was gorgeous, but so off-limits it hurt.
"Hey." He said, his voice like a emerald green python creeping across the forest floor on the hunt, beautiful, smooth, and dangerous. "heard about you and Jack, bummer." Samantha rolled her eyes and walked back into the kitchen where she was making spaghetti for dinner, leaving Will and I standing in the hallway.
"Yeah well, whatever. I had to break it off, he was getting pretty annoying." I said, shrugging lightly. The truth was, I just wasn’t ready to love yet. Not after discovering my other half, I was saving myself. "How are you and Diana?" I asked, attempting to change the subject. His blue eyes darkened slightly.
"Oh, I ended it." He said, shrugging as I had.
"Why?" I asked, my eyes wide with shock. Diana was perfect for him. Well, almost perfect. I personally thought I'd be much better for him, but that was just a stupid crush that would never happen. If anything, it would completely destroy both our friendship when it ended, and completely paralyze us both for the rest of our lives.
Since we're on the subject, why don’t I give you some quick background on what Will and I are part of. We are Halflings. At birth, a god or goddess 'blessed' us with another form, an angelic form, for use in the war in the realm of the gods. When we are summoned, a messenger appears in our dreams and tells us how long we have, and who we need to gather. Will, Patrick, and I are the three Halflings in our area. Amazingly enough, female Halflings are rare, few females are deemed worthy enough to receive the gift of a counterpart. I suppose I should be flattered by this knowledge, but honestly it only piled on the pressure. Females where supposed to be better fighters. We're supposed to have more magic abilities, supposed to be more intelligent. Basically, we where the superior of the two sexes. Patrick and I had been given the duty of watching over Will, who knew what he was but hadn't yet shifted. Also, about the paralyzing thing, Angels are creatures of love. They find the one person they can truly love and stay with the rest of their life, which is why it was almost impossible for those with the gift to date.
"Same old reasons." He answered, shrugging again. "She wasn’t the one, there's someone else." His eyes held mine as he said this, causing my heart to throb painfully. "And because a messenger came to me last night."
