There's something about rivalry & shadows: an uncompromising arrogance, an inscrutable depth. Two fellows, both drunk on rotgut, with a spiteful, foul-beaked parrot in tow. They are close friends & despairing strangers. Time has been unkind to them. The wretched parrot, alighting from one fellow's shoulder to the other's, is squawking; it's black-bulbed eyes glimmering with antipathy.
