MY BOOKSHOP FAQ

EditRED.com has been designed by writers with books to sell.

We quickly learnt, when prompting people to buy our own books, that the most common response from friends, colleagues and blog subscribers was ‘'I can't wait to get myself a copy just as soon as I get paid.'’ In 99% of cases this translated as, ‘'I can’'t wait to get myself a copy, but probably won't because a) Martin Amis has just released a new book I’'d much rather read or b) I'll forget and blow any spare pennies on beer.

Unless you are a very pushy salesman or saleswoman who's constantly carrying a box of books under your arm you won't be selling a copy of your book to the majority of people you mention it to, let alone blog subscribers who you never meet face to face. This is where the EditRED 'My Bookshop' comes in.

The 'My Bookshop' feature was designed so that anybody who views your profile or reads any of your work on EditRED will be prompted to a) buy your book or eBook or b) read uploaded excerpts or book reviews, whereupon they will be prompted once again to buy your book. Once you have uploaded your book cover and blurb adverts for your books are automatically and strategically placed on all your EditRED content pages, meaning blogs, stories, poems, excerpts etc. Remember, it is much easier to get somebody to read a free short story than it is to buy a book by a relatively unknown author. It is much easier to sell a book to somebody who has just enjoyed one of your short stories or blogs, which on EditRED is exactly when we will prompt them to buy your book, by placing an advert for your book at the end of all your uploaded writing. The EditRED 'My Bookshop' feature leaves you free to write and promote shorter pieces that are then used to sell more books.

You can sell your books either by linking to a retailer like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, or, using your own Paypal account so all money goes straight to you, direct to your readers. Selling direct means you have to handle packing and shipping (which you charge for) but also means you make more money as you bypass Amazon's 55% commission.

So how does it work?

As soon as you login to EditRED.com you will be taken to your ‘'My Ink’' page. In the top left corner you will see your User image (if not, you should upload one) and a selection of links that lead you to various functions on EditRED.com.

To start listing your book click the ‘'My Bookshop’' button, which is highlighted yellow. This will open the ‘'My Bookshop’' module where you can add, edit and delete your books at any time.
Assuming you haven’'t uploaded any books yet, what you will see when clicking the ‘'My Bookshop’' link is the panel below.

Click the link to the right, this will open a new window where you can start inputting your book info. The first section is called ‘'Tell us about your book?’'.

Ready to show everyone?

It’'s a relatively easy question, but you are offered the option of uploading your book and keeping it hidden. This is mostly used by authors who are listing their book before it is published, in preparation for an upcoming release date.

Next to the question ‘'Are you ready to show everyone?’' you will see two tick boxes:

  • No, keep this book hidden for now. (This option will mean your book is uploaded but not available for public viewing.)
  • Yes, make it public! (This option will upload your book and make it available for public viewing.)

Select the option that is right for you. If you do select the ‘'No…’' option make a note to go back and make the book ‘'Public’' once the release date has arrived.

Book Title

Simply type or copy and paste the book title into the text box next to the ‘'Book Title’' heading.

Description

In the text box next to the ‘'Description’' heading type or cut and past a 50 word description for your book. You want to keep this brief, this description will be displayed along with you book cover on various key sales pages.

Cover Image

Your cover must be 72 dpi and no more than 300 pixels wide or 400 pixels high. It must be saved as a jpeg, jpg or gif file. If you need help resizing your image, email it to support@editred.com and we will do it for you.

To upload your book cover click the ‘'Browse’' button next to the ‘'Cover Image’' heading, see the image below:

Clicking the ‘'Browse’' button will open a file directory that will enable to locate your book cover as saved on your own computer. Once selected the file name will appear in the ‘'Cover Image’' text box. See the image below:

Once your file has been selected simply scroll down the page to the next section.

Sell Your Book

The ‘'Sell Your Book’' section offers you three ways in which to sell your book direct from your EditRED.com profile and story pages.

1: You can add a link to your book listing at retailer of your choice. We recommend you do all you can to get your book listed on Amazon. (If you are am EditRED ‘'Author’' you will have received a free copy of our ‘'How to Sell More Books on Amazon’' guide.) To add a link simply go to the web site of the retailer your want to link to, search for your book and then copy the URL/web address for your book listing and past it into the text box next to the ‘'External shop’' heading. See the image below:

2: You can also upload an electronic version of your book which can be offered for free download to your readers, or if you have a Paypal account, can be sold direct to your readers at the price you set and without paying any sales commission to EditRED.com.

To upload your ebook file you first need to locate it on your computer. This is done in much the same way as when you searched for your book cover file, by clicking the ‘'Browse’' to the right of the ‘'File’' heading. See the image below:

The next step is deciding whether you want to sell you ebook or give it away. Select the option that suits you by clicking the relevant tick-box. If you have opted to SELL your book you now need to enter the price into the text box next to the ‘'Price’' heading and then decide which currency your price should be displayed in. You do this by clicking the drop down menu to the right of the ‘'Price’' heading.

When customers ‘'BUY’' a copy of your ebook they will automatically receive a download AFTER the payment has been completed.

3: You can also, using your Paypal account, sell hard copies of your books direct to your customers. The most important thing to know about selling hardcopy books direct to your customers is that YOU are responsible for packing and mailing YOUR book to YOUR customer. Don’'t forget to add postage and package to the price of your hardcopy book. This is simple, see the image below:

Once completed, scroll down to the third ands final section.

Add Your Paypal Details

If you have decided to sell your ebook or hardcopy direct from your editRED.com profile or story pages, YOU WILL NEED AN ACTIVE PAYPAL ACCOUNT. As you will know, once you have your account, the email address you used to activate your account is key to you receiving payments. It is this email address that allows you to receive your payments. You will need to insert it into the next section so that Paypal send payments direct to you. See the image below:

NOTE: Whenever a customer buys an ebook or hardcopy book from any of your editRED.com pages the money goes straight to you, directly to your paypal account. EditRED.com does not track these sales or take any commission.

Terms & Conditions

Next you will need to accept the EditRED.com terms and condition that relate directly to your book sales. Remember any sales are made by you, not EditRED.com. A copy of the terms as they appear have been pasted below:

TERMS: In the case of ALL PayPal transactions connected with your books, in all formats and denominations, all money goes directly to the PayPal account you supplied. Edit Red does not take any commissions or royalties on these sales. In the case of sold eBooks, Edit Red will, automatically and only after a completed payment, forward your customers to a page where they can download your eBook. Once you have ticked the box and accepted the terms and conditions that leaves just one thing. Click the ‘'Upload Your Book’' button.

Congratulations, you have added your book! Keep reading to learn how using EditRED .com effectively will result in more book sales.

The only link on the ad above that we haven’'t discussed is the ‘'View Book’' link. Visitors who click this link will go through to your book listing page where they will be able to read your reviews and book excerpts (if you have added them) and comments made by people who have read and enjoyed your book as well as ad’'s for your other books if you have added them. Your book listing will look something like the image below:

How do I check my book details and status?

Once you have added a book it is very easy to manage and edit your books. You start by clicking the ‘'My Bookshop’' link on the My Ink page just next to your user image. Now, instead of a black you will see a display of the book(s) you have added to your EditRED.com profile. See the image below:

The image above shows you the status of your book, in the case of ‘'31 Days’' it says ‘'This Book is Public’'.

Link: You can also see the link (if you have used one) that sends your readers to the retailer you chose. You can check that this link takes people to the correct page by clicking it.

Ebook:
You can also see that the book is available as an ebook, by clicking the file name you will download an exact copy of the ebook received by your readers when they purchase your ebook. You can also, just to the right of the file name, see your selling price.

Hardcopy: The hardcopy heading shows that you have also opted to sell hardcopy books direct, using your Paypal account.

If any of these headings are missing, it is because you have not selected those options. You can edit, delete add and take away any options by clicking the ‘'Edit’' or ‘'Delete’' buttons that are just below the book cover image. Clicking ‘'Delete’' with remove all information and files connected with that book.

Add a Review or Excerpt

Referring once again to the image above, you will notice to dark gray boxes at the bottom of the image, one lists the reviews currently added to this book, the other lists the excerpts currently added to this book. You can add up to 5 reviews and 5 excerpts by clicking the ‘'Add new' links at the bottom of the relevant box. Adding reviews and excerpts is done by pasting the relevant texts into the relevant text boxes. Simple instructions will be found on those pages.
Almost done. Your next move is to give a free ebook to 5 writers from your EditRED reader list and ask them to visit your book page on EditRED and post a rave review. This way, when potential readers visit your page they will have something positive to read about your work.

Great! You've listed your books, added some reviews and excerpts and harangued your favourite writers from your reader list to post some reader comments on your book page, now let's get marketing and increase those book sales!

Selling More Books on EditRED

Selling direct means you have to handle packing and shipping (which you charge for) but also means you make more money as you bypass Amazon's 55% commission.

Use the Short to sell the Long

You probably already have some examples of your work uploaded to your EditRED profile by now. Whether they be short stories, blogs, poems or excerpts, you want to make sure they are free of typos and errors. Remember, your writing will be judged on these examples. They need to be strong and finished. Once your texts are ready, it is time to start inviting readers and potential book buyers.

From your ‘'My Ink' page click the ‘'My Writing' link that is just to the right of your user image. A complete list of all your uploads will appear on the right hand side of your page. Select the upload you want to invite people to read and click the ‘'Edit' button to open the edit module for that upload.

Right at the top you will see a long link that reads, ‘'Invite your friends, family and fellow writers to come and read...' This link enables you to send an external email inviting all your friends, family and colleagues to come and read your writing. Remember when they do, they will see an advert for your book.

Once the invite page is open, fill out the boxes.

Enter email addresses

You can enter as many email addresses as you wish, just separate each email address with a comma.

Personal Message

Although you can bulk mail friends, relatives and colleagues, I generally advise against it. Don't make them feel like they are being spammed, not by somebody they know. That's what companies selling pills and penis extensions do, and I am sure you don't want to be lumped in with them. So take a minute, write something personal. You don't have to write 500 words, just make sure the person getting the email can sense you are writing to them personally.

By default there is already a message in the message text box. You can write in front of it, even delete it and write something of your own if you want to, but be sure to leave the web addresses in that text intact. Otherwise there will be no link to your story included in your email, and your invitees won't know where the party is.

Click Send

That was easy, right? E-mail your upload to EVERY contact you have.

Rinse & Repeat

You should be going through this process every second week. Be careful not to bombard people; aim to be regular and reliable without being a nuisance.

Producing content is not always easy, but remember you are doing this to promote a book. Why not upload a few excerpts from your book and invite people to read those?  After all, they have already been written and they'll take just a minute to upload. Use blogs and book reviews too. Just remember that what you are sending is an example of your penmanship. If it is not 100% finished, don't send it. Drafts are for your EditRed friends and readers, who are there to help you edit and improve. Only a finished product should be sent to your public readers. If it is full of typos and errors, they won't feel very inspired to buy your book.

If you are actively promoting your book you are probably running several blogs at once. However, we recommend you send your MySpace visitors to read your blogs and stories at EditRED.com because you'll be offering them a much more personal experience.  And this is essential.  There has to be a real element of trust on your reader's part if you want to make a sale.

When they read your blog on EditRED they will also see adverts for your books.  These have been strategically placed to catch their attention. You'll be offering them a range of buying options. You can sell direct and make more money yourself or you can self through a retailer like Amazon. Either way, EditRED.com has been designed so that you can use your short works to sell your longer works. Other blogs and networks, while great for many things, have not been designed specifically for writers, especially those with books to sell.
