Well, I made it to hell and those bloody devils threw me back; ergo, I've managed to duck a few times, and live to gain some insights on life.
I've always wanted to write. Even as a little kid, I wanted to be a novelist; accordindly, I even made a little book cover and story when I was 8 or so.
A view on modern art: "These splatters are created by the untalented, then sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.
On novels: Support your fellow Canadians: buy lousy Canadian novels instead of lousy American ones.
When the sun comes crawling out of a manhole at the corner of 5th and vermouth...I park my Stacey Adams and jack-knife my legs...
Live life with gusto, with humility at your side.
Some of my thoughts on writing:
Be concise, extablish your plot and flesh out characters as the book unfolds. Don't waste a page describing your main protagonists, use casual dialogue to fill in details...
You can't just dash off a book: get inside it, feel what your character's feel, one sentence and chapter at a time. Then edit. And edit...then edit again. Make sure everything is linked together; characters, plot(s), and scenes. Hemmington often reworked a sentence 40 times before it met his discriminating taste.
If you would like to read the raw work I've uploaded, please start at the beginning, as some of those pieces are part of a continuing whole. Some are stories that have won acclaim. Any comments, critques, and observations are appreciated. I've got 3 contests to go, and have another 24 chapters before I reread and slice my book apart. I tend to overwrite, as I can summon my muse and endulge in spontaneous flow of consciousness when writing...get the ideas down, edit later.
