Some people seem to think that growing up in a small town can limit the things you do in life. For Amber Dawn, this has not been the case. Amber was born on April 4, 1989, in the small region of Southwest Missouri. She grew up in the small town of Fair Grove, having a population of just over one thousand. Her parents were quite the opposite of wealthy, and Amber grew up as an only child in a small mobile home. She lived next door to her fatherâ??s only brother, sharing about 9 acres of family owned land. Amber went to a small Missionary Baptist church, where she met many friends. Her best friend was named Stevon. He was a couple of years older than she was, but they had amazing chemistry and did everything together.
Amber went into Kindergarten at Fair Grove Public Schools. She arrived only to find out that not all children are friendly. Tortured and excluded by the other children, she became discouraged and lonely through the school years. Amber continued to spend a lot of time with Stevon outside of school. The two of them spent hours playing video games, building with legos, and living out fairytales outdoors. The two of them were both creative people and spent a lot of time drawing, when they were apart. Amber decided at an early age that she wanted to be an artist and loved being creative.
When Amber was nine, her parents had decided to build a house. They were building the house on the same property they lived on, but it was going to be much larger. The mobile home was sold, and the progress of the new house took over a year. The family went through many hardships, during this time, but Amber continued to explore all kinds of art and spent a lot of extra time with Stevon.
Middle school is always an awkward time for children. Amber had taken up middle school Art, but the Art teacher put down her work, discouraging her from the subject altogether. Meanwhile, her English teacher, Mrs. Richardson, had quite another opinion of Amber. She began writing little notes on Amberâ??s work, telling her how great she thought her writing was. Amber took this to heart immediately and began writing short stories. Around the same time, Stevon had become interested in writing as well, so they compared stories over the phone. Amber had finally decided that short stories limited her more than she liked, and she began working on her first book. Stevon had given her an idea, and Amber went crazy with it. It took her over a year to finish it, but it wasnâ??t nearly refined enough for her.
Amber went into high school with only her writing to keep her going. School had always come so easy to her, but she had overloaded her schedule far too much to breath. She had begun rewriting her book on the computer, and she wasnâ??t ready to give up because of homework. Amber became very ill over the winter of her freshman year, and everything came to a pause. She pressed forward through the school days, but she would collapse the second she got home. Her parents became distressed, but every doctor Amber went to could not find anything wrong. She began losing weight at an alarming rate, and she couldnâ??t function properly.
Amber eventually gave up hope after several months. She became depressing and hard to be around, and her writing was no longer existent. Her lifelong friendship, with Stevon, had languished, and she felt completely alone. Amberâ??s sophomore year, she was diagnosed with Crohnâ??s Disease and began receiving treatment. Once she began getting her life back, she took up writing again, and tried to revive her friendship with Stevon. Stevon had already moved on and avoided her calls.
On November 19, 2004, Stevon was killed in a car accident. Amberâ??s life was completely changed from that day forward. She left behind everything she had ever been in her life and decided to start anew. Amber had lost her best friend by becoming morbid and dark, so she decided to fill her life with the feelings of others. Amber could now see everything in a different way. She could tell almost everything about a person from the way they walked into a room. It seemed so easy to her to place herself in the shoes of another. Her motto became, â??Everything happens for a reason.â? Amber began giving wise advice to people much older than she.
Through the next few years, Amber became somewhat popular and began writing again. She found that a computer virus had completely destroyed the second copy of her book, so she began once more. She also started dating, which led to disaster over the years. Amber finally fell in love with a boy named Marshall towards the end of high school. Amber kept her few good friends close, and continued giving advice to those who truly needed it.
Amber graduated on May 20, 2007, with honors and a college preparatory certificate. She worked in the local video store for about a year, where she decided to write her short story, â??Image.â? She had been inspired to write this Science Fiction story, during her sophomore year, when she was asked to write a suspenseful short story for English. Amber ran with the idea, straying away from her normal Fantasy novels, and wrote the entire story in her spare time. Lately, Amber has spent most of her summer, after graduation, trying to relax. She continues writing the first book in her fantasy series, â??The Legends of Leabon.â? Amber promises at least five books in the series, which she hopes to get out over the next ten years of her life. She still lives at home in Fair Grove, spending her valuable free time with her family, Marshall, and her best friend, Kelsey. Someday, she says, â??I hope that I can get famous. I donâ??t want all the attention; I just donâ??t want to get a real job...â?
