How do I find other writers?
There
are many ways to meet other writers on Edit Red. You could click
the 'Uploads' link in the main menu bar and meet those that have
uploaded most recently. Or you could visit some our Featured Writers
that you will see promoted throughout Si. If they appear in the
Featured Writer boxes you know they have stuff for you to read.
You could also visit the forum, look for users who have made
interesting threads or posts and click on their user names to visit
their profile. The bookshelf function is another
good way to meet writers, if you read a story that you like visit that
writers bookshelf (on their profile page) and see what stories and
writers they recommend. Of course there is also
the 'Browse User' function, but this is really for when you are looking
fore somebody by name, or user name.
I've just uploaded a Story. How do I get
people to read it?
It is
important to know that simply having a space on the web does not mean
thousands of people are knocking down your door. Even your own web
site, with your name as the url will not get any visitors if all you do
is load it and walk away. While we at Edit Red strive to bring writers
and readers together, it is worth noting that the most active members
do grab all the attention. The easiest and most
affective way to bring other Edit Red users to your profile and writing
is to visit their profile and leave your mark by commenting on their
writing. Once you've done that, send them a friend request and/or mail
them an invitation into your own reading room. Since the inception of
Si, we have seen that 80% of comments posted on stories and poems are
reciprocated. Another good way to bring attention
to your writing is to post something in the forum. Try starting a
discussion about something that will get like-minded people involved.
If it's interesting or provocative, people will check out your profile
just to find out where you're coming from.
Don't forget that your writing, if set to Public, is available to the
world, not just other members of Edit Red. So use the 'Invite Friends'
function to invite your friends, family and peers to read your work,
they will not need to be a member of Edit Red to read it. (But they
will need to join if they want to comment, though this is totally free.)
How do I prepare my Stories for an online
readership?
If you
upload a story over 2500 words, don’t expect many people to
read it. If a reader browsing the web is faced with a choice between a
5000 and a 1000-word story, guess which one he’ll go for? And
if your story is 10 000+words, well… fergeddaboudit.
Most people don’t particularly like reading off
the screen, but there are a few things you can do out of courtesy to
make the experience at least tolerable: 1 ::
Place a line break between each paragraph. 2 ::
Justify your text to both left and right margins.
3 :: Try not to stray too far beyond 2500 words.
4 :: Check your text one more time for typos, it's a common mistake and
one that people don't pay enough attention to. A typo can completely
throw the pace and rhythm of a story or poem, so show your readers that
you care about your work and rid it of typos. Oh
yes, and make sure your story is wonderful to read… but you
already knew that. How should I use my Reader List?
There
are three key reasons why you should build a 'Reader List'.
1 :: As you will have seen on your own My Ink page, all
users have a table headed 'Latest Uploads From Your Reader List', that
appears on the right
hand side of the page. Only the texts of people YOU have added to your
reader list will be shown here, it's a fast track method to find the
newest work by your favorite writer's. Likewise, your texts will appear
in the latest upload tables of those that have you on their Reader
List. 2 :: Another key feature attached to the
reader list is the bulletin board, this works like a bulk e-mail that
only goes out to those on your Reader List. You will find your Bulletin
Board above the Latest Uploads Board on your My Ink page, only messages
from those who appear on your Reader List will be listed there.
3 :: Finally, when you upload a text into your Reading Room
you have the option to set the access levels so that only those users
on your Reading List can read your story. This function is great if you
want to workshop a story for future publication and want to limit the
access. How can I lure my friends, family or
colleagues directly to my uploads?
You can
at any time send an external e-mail to your friends and family which
will automatically generate a link back to the upload of your choice.
1 :: On you MY INK page click the MY UPLOADS link.
2 :: From your listed uploads select the one you want to
send an invite for and click the 'Edit' link just to the right of the
title. 3 :: At the top of the page you will be
presented with three links, click the 'Click here to invite your
friends to read your latest uploads.' link.
4 :: Type or paste the email addresses (separated by commas)
of those you wish to invite into the email boxes provided. You can
either send your invite with the built in message, or type your own.
Basic Features on your MY INK page
will
give you a breakdown of available features.
The
first thing you need to know is that your 'My
Ink' page, which is the page you go to automatically after login, is
where you manage your profile. Once logged in, you can get to your MY
INK page by clicking the 'MY INK' in the top left corner of the page,
just below the 'Welcome...' heading. |
| |
|
Troubleshooting
will help you navigate the features, everything from uploading stories
to building your book store.

Profile/Account |
| | How do I turn off email notification for
comments and messages?
1 :: From your MY INK page click the 'Edit MY
Profile' link just to the right of your user image.
2 :: Scroll down, just below the text box for your bio you will see a
tick box with the sentence 'Notify me when I receive new messages and
comments' simply un-check this box and then click save at the bottom of
the page.
How do I add a link from my profile page to
my own website/homepage?
1 :: From your MY INK page click the 'Edit MY
Profile' link just to the right of your user image.
2 :: At the top of the page you will see a small text box with the
heading 'MY HOMEPAGE' simply type your full web address into the text
box. You must include the
http:// at the beginning for your link to work.
I have lost my password, how can I get a new
one?
1 :: Passwords on Edit Red are encrypted, so once
you have forgot/lost it, we cannot tell you what it was. To generate a
new password you must click the 'Lost Password?' link on the front
page, you will find it directly below the login box. By filling out
this page, our system will generate a new password for you so you can
access your account. It is advised that once you have logged in, you
reset you password to something that you can easily remember. For
instructions on how to reset your password once you are logged in, read
the instructions directly below.
How do I reset/change my automatically
generated password?
1 :: From your My Ink Page click the 'Edit MY
Profile' link. When the edit page opens, scroll down until you see the
heading 'Change Pass', next to this is a tick box, click the box once
and two small text boxes will appear. Retype your new password twice
and click save. You new password will be active.
I am a member already but can't login?
1 :: This is rare, but the most common cause is
cookies. You can sign up to Edit Red regardless of your cookie
settings, but to login to Edit Red you must have your browser setting
set to allow cookies. In you browser preferences you can allow cookies
for all sites, or set it to allow cookies just for those sites you wish
to access, like Edit Red.
How can I see if I am a 'Featured Writer'?
Below you user image on your MY INK page there will
be one of two headings, if the heading says 'Featured Writer' then you
have successfully become a featured writer and your profile will
automatically be promoted throughout Edit Red. As a featured writer you
will also have access to the 'My Bulletin' Feature that allows you to
send bulk mail messages to those users on your reader list.
If the heading under the image says 'Become Featured' then you are
missing one of the three criteria to becoming a Featured Writer.
Remember, you must have a user image, an content upload and have made a
minimum of 5 comments on the work of other users.
How do I upload a user image to my profile?
This is really easy! Your image MUST be a j-peg or
gif file. It MUST be 72 dpi and no wider than 300 pixels wide.
If your image is not uploading it is because it is the wrong file type
or it is too big.
I have uploaded a new user image, but still
see the old one?
If you have any problems resizing images you can
e-mail them to our support staff at support@editred.com
and we will resize the image and upload it to your profile for you and
we will normally be rather expedient about it.

Embedded
images Images are defined with the
<img> tag combined with a url that leads to the online
location of the image you want to display. Your images must already be
online, on another server/site, like flickr, myspace, or your own home
page. The code to the right does not include any sizing, so the image
will appear actual size. For this example we are
using the Edit Red logo. | <img

= |
| | You
can also define the dimensions by adding
them to the existing code. In this example the width is set to 100

<a> tag that leads into an <img> tag.
| <a

src="http://www.editred.com/IMAGES/logo.gif" width="161" height="68"
border="0"> | = |
 | | Note
in the code where it says border="0", change that "0" to "1" and your
image has a border. | <a
href="http://www.editred.com"><img
src="http://www.editred.com/IMAGES/logo.gif" width="161" height="68"
border="1"> | = |
 | NOTE:
So that you do not spoiled
the layout of your page, making it hard for your readers to read your
story, you should never display an image that is more than 500 pixels
or "100%" wide. Otherwise your readers will have to scroll left and
right every time they read a new line. Also, please remember the more
images you add to your page, the longer it will take for those images
to load. | |
| |
Why is my new upload not listed on the main
upload page?
Though paying users can upload as many texts as you
want in any one day, only one of those texts will be listed on the main
upload page linked from the menu bar. This is because when users, often
new, upload 10+ texts they then appear 10 times and dominate this
upload page that is meant for everybody. Though
only listed once per day on the main upload page, all your uploads will
be available and will appear on your profile page
How do I format my text?
We have added a formatting suite so that you can
use BOLD, ITALIC and UNDERLINE
as well as indents in your text uploads. The formatting suite is
situated on your My Upload page just above the main text box. The
formatting suite is not compatible with all browsers and in such cases
will not be visible. MAC USERS:
The formatting suite is not compatible with Safari, or Internet
Explorer for Mac, to access the formatting suite you need to download
Mozilla Firefox, you can do that here.
PC USERS: You need
>>> IE 5.5+ As a 'writer'
or 'author' member of Edit Red, you can also use basic html tags for
formatting your texts.
Who owns the copyright on my uploads/writing
on Edit Red?
YOU DO, quite simply. The only time we will ask for
rights is if your writing is selected, after you have submitted it
yourself, for one of our books. Even then, we do not own the rights, we
simply get first publication rights. This amounts to you giving us
permission to publish the work in said format.
How can I protect/copyright my work?
If you do not wish to fork out money for copyright,
you can still protect your work against theft or plagiarism with what
is known as 'Poor Mans Copyright' Simply print off a hard copy of your
work, put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. MAKE SURE YOU DO
NOT OPEN IT WHEN IT ARRIVES. This puts an official date on your sealed
work. So put it somewhere safe.
Could my work be stolen?
There is always a
chance your work could be stolen or plagiarized no matter what format
it appears in. While the web is open to such abuse, we at Edit Red have
not experienced one case where a user's writing has been stolen or
plagiarised. If such a case does arise, we will investigate thouroughly.
