07/01/2008 | instead of uploading off word, copy your file into .txt format. That way all of the special MSWord character formating.. like open and close quote marks, etc. will be homogenized into plain ole typewriter stuff. Granted, you'll lose the indents and margin adjusts that go with a word file, but all you need to do is insert the HTML code to format the body of your upload and everything will be okay.
Don't look at HTML as a roadblock, just as a diversion. Enjoy the drive and learning something new. |

08/01/2008 | Hang on ... I've just made this in 30 seconds without html. Line breaks and indents no problem...
indents! line breaks!
Yes, it is best to copy and paste from plain text, but beyond that there's little expertise involved. Microsoft word contains coding that tends to muck up uploads, but this has always been the case. It varies browser to browser, but there are often problems. Hence we recommend on the upload page to paste plain text and use the formatting suite from there.

08/01/2008 | i totally agree, i'm not using this site as much as i used to because of this situation. When i can upload things and have them look the same way as they are writting, i'll post what i'm working on.
One should not have to think about their upload, it's an upload. It's an upload. It's an upload.
Hopefully, someday the mods will realize this. |

08/01/2008 | It can be a pain, but please believe that it's not the admin at EditRed's fault.
I work for a web design company, and we build sites for clients with a backend that allows them maintain their site themselves by entering content through a similar WYSIWYG editor. Ours allows a bunch more options because it's for editing web pages and not just uploading text (images, hyperlinks, etc). That only makes it even more difficult to teach people how to use.
The two biggest issues with the formatting of that content:
1. Microsoft Word and it's frivolous code.
2. User error.
It can be rough, but it's the way things are. If you want to use a medium, you've got to become accustomed to using it. |

08/01/2008 | I haven't been able to get any html to work here. The link thing is very annoying. And it's not because I don't know how to make one. This is the only site I've ever been on that would not accept hyperlink code. I gave up on the text editor. It would be nice if I could at least show underlining to indicate italics as I do in my MS...but honestly, if it takes that long to figure something like that out...I'm not going to bother. It takes too much time away from writing and editing fiction. |

08/01/2008 | I'm not asking anyone to "think about my upload." I do want a site that expects writers to use to be able to accept my uploads as they are written.
I have enough to worry about my writing without having to figure out how to get my writing to display itself correctly. It's a pain in the ass, and i have enough of those as it is. |

08/01/2008 | rosie, do you mean hyperlink in a story upload or on the forum? the first post on any thread here won't take any embedded links or allow the thread originator to edit. All subsequent replies are open to html.
If you're writing straight up stories, you shouldn't really need anything special in the formatting anyway. Double line breaks to denote a new paragraph and maybe some italics to indicate a shift in voice or POV. Font manipulation is easy. The Support and FAQ tab on the menu bar up top has some basic html coding on the info page.
Good luck everyone, posting stories shouldn't be a chore and if it becomes one, maybe you're working too hard. |

08/01/2008 | I guess you should accept the first suggestion I offered as to how to get rid of the gibberish that comes up when you paste word file text into the upload block here on editred.
Open a notepad file first and simply paste to that utility to "wash" the MSWord code out of the plain text. Then bring your .txt file to the upload block. That's only 2 additional steps. |

09/01/2008 | Ah...thanks Champagne...that esplains it. I tried all sorts of variations to get hyperlinks to show and just gave up.
On the uploads, the html shows in both the text editor and without when I use tags....so no underlining. BTW...on the FAQ, while the tag is given , the underline example is for . I know it's a typo but others might be confused.
I write everything in manuscript format so it doesn't really matter to me that I can't do formatting. Every once in a while I'll need to indicate italics by underlining, like in the Ghosts story, but as I said, html always shows on my uploads. It would be nice to be able to put things in a non-proportional font. But the words are all I'm really interested in uploading and as long as they don't have gobbledy gook in them, I'm okay. |

09/01/2008 | BEHOLD!!! INDENTS, LINE BREAKS, ITALICS, BOLD
Dear all. I posted this above... no html needed. All you need to do is paste from a text file. We absolutely accept that it's a pain not to be able to upload formatted text direct from Word, but as Champagne points out above, this isn't all our fault. We'll definitely continue to work on way of getting Word to work seamlessly with uploads, but in the meantime, plain text is the best option. If you're struggling send the doc to support@editred.com - with what you want - and we'll sort it out at this end.
And yes, for numerous technical reasons the first post in a forum thread is html-proof. However, all subsequent posts will accept it.
Whilst we're on the subject, some clever clogs posted up a vid of The Clash the other day. Nice work!

09/01/2008 | Sean,
If you figure out how to allow pasting from Word seamlessly into an online editor, I would be most grateful to find out how. The editors we install for clients' sites have a 'Paste from Word' option, and even that doesn't work half the time. |

10/01/2008 | Cheers people - pasting from Word isn't essential - sure it would save time etc, but as long as it gets formatted SOMEHOW, then it's ok...
