I started telling stories to my little sisters when I was a child myself. In high school, I wrote lyrical poetry. By the time I was in my early twenties, I was trying my hand at short stories.
In 1998, I won the Grand Award for Best Screenplay at Worldfest Houston, competing against writers from all over the world. Today, I write mostly novel length fantasy & science fiction action adventures, but still dabble in poetry. My goal is to be published and make my living from my writing.
I attend a weekly writing critique group and have done so for the past ten years plus. Once a month, I attend a poetry group along the same lines. This is something I highly recommend for anyone interested in making their writing better.
Also, try to write an hour or two at least five days a week. If getting published is your goal, then treat your writing as if it were a small business and put the time, training and energy into that.
