In some form or another, a story must captivate me. It must pull me in and hold me tight with a very relentless grip and it must have a fairly fast-moving pace. In addition, the idea of needing outside sources to analyze a piece of poetry or work of fiction has always struck me as rediculous. Literature is about what you think the author is trying to say. It's about how your heart responds to what is said. If you get the message wrong, the only person who has the right to tell you that you were wrong is the author.

This is why I didn't attempt to major in English or to travel down the creative writing path in college. Why should I spend time reading stories, plays, poems and novels that someone I may not agree with is telling me to read. I'm not trying to say that Shakespeare isn't great or that Melville is a waste of time. All I'm saying is that, if I can't be drawn in, if I can't find meaning, it's not meant for me. So I persued the world of elementary education... Big mistake. That wasn't me either.

Sure, I got my degree. I spent a year working for an afterschool program, which I loved, but I'm not meant to be in charge of children. Not children that aren't mine and not children in large groups. That's not me either. The next thing on my list, culinary school.

Though I have enjoyed the culinary arts, I don't have what it takes for the culinary world. The kitchen is very fast-paced. It's very much a man's world. And chefs are highly full of anger issues.

Now here I am, looking for a way to make it with the one thing I've had a passion for since third grade. Exploring the one thing I was afraid of exploring for fear of losing my passion, but now realizing it's something I can't live without. Here I am aching to make a living at the one thing all of my friends have applauded me for and teachers and professors have said I have a natural talent at.

...May the world come find me.
