A girl is born in the heart of a work of art. She walks among the marble colonnades, over the draw bridges and granite embankments, draped by the white nights of Leningrad. She plays piano under the arched ceilings of old-city palaces. Then she grows up.
A plane flight over the ocean - it looks like crumbled foil between the clouds - and the girl steps upon the brave new world. Strange words, strange people, her home is gone. She cries.
Then winters chase away the autumns that step on the summers' heels. The girl speaks her mind in the new tongue and learns. Graduate school busltes with life. And then she is a teacher.
In the place where she was new once, in the place she was brave, she now walks with her own students and tells them stories that can only be true if they believe her. They open their eyes, and she says, "Trust me." They do.
